It’s officially awards season! From the Golden Globes, to the Golden Raspberry Awards, to the Oscars, they all take place in January and February. So get into your gown or tux, and get ready for some of Hollywood’s biggest nights! Or you can join the majority of us and just watch them in your PJs with some snacks.
However, if you missed watching the Golden Globes on Sunday, here are the winners, losers, and highlights of the show.
The 76th Golden Globes Biggest Winners
Hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, the Golden Globes took place last weekend, with some predictive wins, some surprises, and some great, funny moments. However, one of the most talked about moments came before the show even began! “The Fiji Girl,” as the internet dubbed her, was a young woman working the Golden Globes red carpet. Somehow, she managed to photobomb some of the biggest names in the business, all while holding a tray of Fiji water bottles. The photo above is just one example.
The internet loved it, and it quickly became a viral meme. In fact, the photos went so viral that Fiji Water earned $12 million in ad impressions after the Golden Globes!
Out of a respectable list, Bohemian Rhapsody took the Best Motion Picture Category. It beat out movies like A Star Is Born, Black Panther, and If Beale Street Could Talk. Its win came as a massive surprise to many, with most speculating beforehand that the fifth remake of A Star Is Born would win. Rami Malek, who played the legendary Freddie Mercury in the film, won Best Actor as well.
Glenn Close snagged Best Actress in a Motion Picture, for her performance in the independent drama The Wife. This win also left A Star Is Born fans shocked, as many believed Lady Gaga would take home the award. Close seemed surprised as well, before giving her heartwarming speech. However, the Best Original Song went to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, for their song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born.
The Comedy Wins
In the Musical/Comedy category, Crazy Rich Asians won, to no one’s surprise – it was the most beloved movie of 2018. Olivia Colman took the Best Actress in Comedy/Musical for her role in The Favorite, while Christian Bale took the Best Actor in Comedy/Musical for his role as Dick Cheney in Vice. The movie Green Book took several awards: Best Script, Best Comedy, Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali); but Best Director went to Alfonso Cuarón, for Roma.
Speaking of legends, a hilarious moment happened during the night. Current James Bond, Daniel Craig, and legendary Idris Elba – who is rumored to be the next Bond – snapped a selfie together, where they had a “stare-down,” which Elba posted on his Instagram story. Bond versus Bond? Now that’s a movie we would absolutely watch!
TV Wins And Highlights
In TV, Best Drama Series went to The Americans. However, the star of the night was Sandra Oh, who also hosted the show. She took home Best Actress in a TV Series for her part in Killing Eve. Oh actually presented an award immediately afterward, her shock and emotion still clear on her face. It was a funny, lovely moment.
There was another funny/awkward moment in the evening when Emma Stone yelled: “I’m sorry!” after Oh made a joke about whitewashing. The winning actress talked about how Hollywood often picks white actors for roles meant for people of color. And Stone, who was called out for her casting in the movie Aloha, felt self-aware and compelled to apologize.
