ABC announced this 90-minute live event will take place on May 22, 2019. Recently, live, fictional television has started making something of a comeback. However, it’s mostly been live musicals. This reboot will mark the first live presentation of a classic show.

Back in the ’70s and ’80s, both fans and critics loved the sitcom All In The Family. It even ran for eight years, from 1971 to 1979. However, it’s certainly a very divisive show and, to be honest, it’s surprising they’re airing today! The show focuses on a typical, white, working-class family living in New York. Archie Bunker is not only the patriarch, but he is also a narrow-minded, prejudiced man who dislikes…well just about everybody. The show used its platform to discuss some major issues at the time, including religion, breast cancer, and the Vietnam War.

The Jeffersons, a spin-off of Family, ran from 1975 to 1985 and centers around an African-American family living in a white society. We got to see their everyday life, struggles, and successes. Like its predecessor, the show also brought up complicated issues, like women’s rights and racism and dealt with them in a hands-on way. The Jeffersons was created before All In The Family went off the air and also received critical acclaim.

A Cast Of Hollywood Stars

Obviously, many of the original stars are no longer with us. Instead, huge modern stars will fill the large shoes of the original cast. Signed on are Woody Harrelson, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Wanda Sykes, Will Ferrell, Ellie Kemper, and Gloria Stivic – and for all we know, there might be more guest appearances.

The Oscar-nominated Harrelson will play Archie Bunker, which is a wonderful casting. Bunker’s wife, Edith, will be portrayed by Tomei. And as for the Jeffersons – you guessed it: Sykes and Foxx will play the married couple, Louise and George. We cannot wait to see the incredible on-screen chemistry they’ll probably have! The hilarious Will Ferrell will play Tom Willis and Kemper as Gloria Stivic.

“A Testament To The Greatness Of This Show”

Norman Lear, the iconic writer of the original shows, talked to Deadline about those who claim All In The Family or The Jefferson could not air today. He said, “We disagree with them and are here to prove, with two great casts depicting of All In The Family and The Jeffersons, the timelessness of human nature. I cannot wait to see what these glorious performers make in our time of these indelible characters.”

Kimmel mentioned in the interview the astonishing amount of stars who agreed to join the project. “The fact that a group of Oscar winners eagerly agreed to play these iconic characters is a testament to the greatness of these shows and their creator.”
