The 2022 Billboard Music Awards are coming! This year, the show will air on NBC, and most of the performers, as well as the nominees, have been announced on social media.
The Billboard Music Awards’ Top Performers
The 2022 Billboard Music Awards have collected performers of different genres and backgrounds, capturing a variety of music fans. As always, this year’s Billboard Music Awards will feature countless stars vying to take home a prestigious award as well as incredible performances from the best of the best. And we’re not just talking about new stars with TikTok hits!
First, let’s find out who’s going to showcase their talents. The first announcement came on April 19: Megan Thee Stallion became the first star to be added to the list. Yet, no one knows what she’ll end up performing. But on April 18, the rapper opened up about a new song on Instagram, which may be featured. She also has a popular collaboration with Dua Lipa called “Sweetest Pie” that could be in the running.
In addition to one of the greatest women in rap, Nigerian rap superstar Burna Boy will be at the BMAs for the first time. Puerto Rican singer Alejandro — who became a finalist in four categories in 2022 — is a newcomer, too. Others gracing the stage with their presence include Latto and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The latter band just came out with an album called Unlimited Love, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200! Later, BMAs also announced Florence + the Machine, Maxwell, and others will be performing.
And the Billboard Nominees Are…
Even Mary J. Blige is getting major recognition from the award show this year. The iconic musician will grab her well-deserved Icon Award on live TV! In the past, just 10 superstars have received the award, including P!nk, Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Cher, Celine Dion, and others. Of course, the singer won’t leave without a breathtaking performance — fans around the world are waiting for the show she’ll put on.
Now, what about nominees? There are a ton of well-known names on the list. For example, The Weeknd is dominating with a whopping 17 nominations! His “Save Your Tears (Remix)” with Ariana Grande alone has six in total. With so many opportunities, the singer ought to receive at least one award if not more. Another star, Doja Cat, has 14 nominations. Justin Bieber and Olivia Rodrigo, the social media celebrity and popular singer, both have 13.
The awards show includes all chart achievements from April 10, 2021 through March 26, 2022. That means the most popular songs of 2021 and 2022, like Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U” and Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More,” are included. Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves,” Gayle‘s “ABCDEFU,” and even the Encanto soundtrack are hoping to grab awards as well.
The Billboard Music Awards will air on Sunday, May 15 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC live from Las Vegas, Nevada. The show will be hosted by none other than Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is also the executive producer.
