Biggest Box Office Bombs of 2019

As the year winds down, its time to look back at the biggest box office bombs of 2019. From the new reboot of Charlie’s Angels to Keanu Reeves’ Replicas, these are the films that hurt their production companies the most…

Hellboy

Date of release: April 12, 2019
Budget: $50 million
Global box office gross: $44 million

Hellboy earned a massive following as first a comic book and then a 2004 feature film. Audiences adored the original – the 2019 remake, however, didn’t cut it. Its box office failure is partially due to bad timing. It came out around the same time as some other box office giants: Avengers: EndGame, Lion King, Toy Story 4, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. That’s a lot of competition! And despite an a-list casting, led by Stranger Things’ David Harbour, Hellboy never managed to make back its production budget.

Dark Phoenix

Date of release: June 5, 2019
Budget: $200 million
Global box office gross: $252 million

Dark Phoenix takes home two unwanted cakes: it’s not only one of the biggest box office bombs of 2019, but it’s also the worst of the entire X-Men franchise. There are many reasons why the film flopped; but to sum it up, Phoenix simply fell short of the other delightful, action-filled X-Men films. Its a real shame, especially for Sophie Turner, as it was her first major role outside of Game of Thrones. Still, the story lacked imagination and edge, leading many viewers to feel like they had wasted their money.

Charlie’s Angels

Date of release: November 14, 2019
Budget: $48 million
Global box office gross: $13 million (updated November 24)

Charlie’s Angels had a lot going for it. It features giant names like director, producer, and writer Elizabeth Banks, and actresses Kirsten Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska. Moreover, the soundtrack, featuring hits from artists like Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey, continues to rack up sales and streams. Still, none of that could have saved what critics and audiences alike are calling a boring remake that no one asked for.

To make matters worse, in an interview, Banks claimed that the reason Angels flopped is because audiences are still not ready for female-led action films. The backlash was swift, with many pointing out that movies like Woman Woman, Frozen II, and Captain Marvel, all female-led, have done incredibly well at the box office. Perhaps Angels can become a wakeup call to back off the remakes and reimaginings.

Replicas

Date of release: January 11, 2019
Budget: Unknown
Global box office gross: $4 million

Keanu Reeves is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood. He’s humble and loves to help people, on top of being an incredible actor. The actor doesn’t take on many roles each year, making the movies he does choose a special treat. Still, even Reeves couldn’t save the sinking ship that is Replicas. First, Replicas, directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, leaked online. However, that isn’t the only reason the movie became a major flop. Critics and audiences alike called it nearly unwatchable, with the film only earning a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. Ouch.
