One day out of the year is dedicated to getting your hands on free comic books. Countless comic book shops across the U.S. (and now the world) dedicate their time and resources to giving away their collections without additional pay. Anyone coming to the shop can receive a copy with no hesitation. But first, let’s unpack why the Free Comic Book Day was actually created. It was founded to lure more potential fans into the comic book universe in the belief that everyone got a copy they would completely love. That said, titles chosen every year are popular and target a wide range of different ages and backgrounds. Free Comic Book Day comes on the first Saturday of May – it’s May 7 in 2022. On that day, different geeks and casual fans stand in lines at their local shops and make friends in the community.

Of course, the shops chosen for the event are special and unique. They all have comics, graphic novels, toys, and merchandise to surprise the fans! Apart from products, participants can also watch people transform into their favorite characters and do photoshoots – a lot of fans come in cosplays. What about the variety of publishers? Big names like DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite Entertainment and Image Comics participate in the annual event, as well as more than 2,300 local comic shops.

The diversity of picks proves that comic books are for everyone, indeed. Superheroes, film and TV show illustrations, collaborations, video games, popular tales – you can read them all during the Free Comic Book Day. Titles include Pokemon, Doctor Who, SpongeBob, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Riverdale, Overwatch, and Star Wars. Remember we mentioned cosplay? Well, many comic book shops host costume contests along with signing events, drawings from artists, raffles, and other activities. Fans have to explore several shop options to enjoy the full range. This year, issuers recommend American fans to grab a copy of different books. The best picks are Doctor Who: The Fugitive Doctor #1 (Titan Comics), Stranger Things/ Resident Alien (Dark Horse Comics), Spider-Man/ Venom #1 (Marvel Comics), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW Publishing), and Best Archie Comic Ever #0 (Archie Comics).

In case you’re a Marvel fan, there are Avengers/X-Men/Eternals: Judgment Day #0, Spider-Man/Venom #1, and Marvel Voices #1. DC lovers, on the other hand, can take a look at Dark Crisis #0, Galaxy: The Prettiest Star, and DC: League of Super-Pets. How do you find participating shops? Find the Official Free Comic Book Day Store Locator online to find out which locations participate in the event. Then, come to the shop on May 7 – that’s all. Unfortunately, the event doesn’t go online. One of Free Comic Book Day’s purposes is to gather more people in brick-and-mortar locations.

Yet, fans can look up the editions online later – on the publisher’s digital app, website, or comic book services.
