After many attempts and months of speculation, Disney finally revealed they are working on a new Hocus Pocus movie! Read on to discover everything you need to know…
Hocus Pocus 2 Is In The Works
The original Hocus Pocus, starring Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker, debuted in 1993. It quickly became a Halloween cult classic, making millions. In 2017, the company tried to reboot the film, without the original cast. Then, in 2018, Disney Publishing released an official, novelized sequel. However, nothing ever graced the small or big screens. In fact, at one point, it seemed like Hocus Pocus 2 had died completely, with Midler saying: “after all these years and all the fan demand, I do believe I can stand and firmly say an unequivocal no.” Well, Bette Midler should have known: never say never!
Now, finally, after 26 years, the world’s largest movie studio announced a Hocus Pocus sequel! Jen D’Angelo, who first came to fame as a co-producer and writer of Workaholics, will write the new film. And that’s not all we know about Hocus Pocus 2…
Crew & Cast: Original? Brand New?
Other than D’Angelo signing on as the head writer Disney did not confirm much else. As of right now, fans don’t know who will join the cast or when the film will even come out! However, Disney did confirm that they are working on bringing back the original Sanderson sisters: Midler, Parker, and Kathy Najimy. And let’s face it – will it really feel like Hocus Pocus without them? There’s good news too: all three actresses have confirmed they would like to return. Most recently, when talking about returning, Parker said, “I would love that. I think we’ve been very vocal that we’re very keen.”
The project remains in the early development phase: D’Angelo has only recently finished the script. Whether or not the original director, Kenny Ortega, will come back remains unknown. But fans do know one thing: the Hocus Pocus sequel will first premiere on Disney+, Disney’s new streaming service. The streaming platform will launch this November 12 in the US, Canada, and several other regions. And, as you might imagine, Disney is pulling out the big guns to make sure it can compete with the likes of Netflix and Hulu…
Disney Is Not Playing Around
Hocus Pocus sequel is far from the most prominent project Disney+ will feature. In fact, sorry Pocus fans, its actually pretty far down the list! Since good ‘ol Mickey Mouse announced Disney+ back in November of 2018, almost all the upcoming shows and films have delighted fans. Star Wars fans cannot wait for The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars show ever, to premiere next month. Meanwhile, for comic book fans, Disney+ will debut four Marvel shows over the next two years! Finally, the company also plans on reviving old hits, like Lizzie McGuire (starring Hilary Duff).
Of course, the streaming service will also feature all of Disney’s original movies, from Snow White to Frozen. Between Disney+ launching in November and the last numbered Star Wars film premiering in December, this holiday season looks to become one of Dinsey’s largest ever. Stay tuned for how it all turns out!
