As hard as it might seem to believe, I Love Lucy premiered way back on October 15, 1951. However, even today, it remains one of the most popular and beloved sitcoms ever. As we approach the 70th anniversary of the show, let’s take a look at the greatest I Love Lucy episodes ever!
“Lucy’s Italian Movie”
While Lucille Ball’s iconic character, Lucy Ricardo, was married to famed singer Ricky Ricardo, she often wanted to become a Hollywood star herself. In “Lucy’s Italian Movie” she finally gets the chance! On a train ride to Rome, Lucy manages to earn a chance to star as an American tourist in a big Italian movie. Of course, Lucky takes the offer in a heartbeat!
Unfortunately, as usual, Lucy’s silly ideas get the better of her. After she learns the film’s name, Bitter Grapes, she decides to research the role by actually stomping grapes. What follows is one of the funniest grape-smashing scenes of all time. In the end, Lucy’s chances at stardom are hilariously ruined, but she learns an important lesson about friendship. Like so many of the best I Love Lucy episodes, “Lucy’s Italian Movie” has equal parts hilarity and heart.
One of the best-remembered episodes of I Love Lucy, “Job Switching” always has fans in hysterics. In “Job Switching,” Ricky and Fred feel mad that their wives spend way too much money, while they work all day long. At the same time, Lucy and Ethel want to show the boys that completing a long list of house chores is not quite as easy as they seem to think.
So, the men and women decide to swap places for a week! Lucy and Ethel start working at a local chocolate factory, while Ricky and Fred try to keep the house in order. As you might suspect, by the end of the week, everyone’s begging for things to return to normal!
“Lucy Is Enceinte”
While many of the greatest I Love Lucy episodes are all about humor, some also had quite a bit of heart. Without a doubt, “Lucy Is Enceinte,” ranks among the sweetest. In it, Lucy wants to tell Ricky she’s pregnant, but he’s a little too busy for a sit-down conversation. So, in typical undercover fashion, Lucy dons a disguise and requests him to sing a song titled “We’re Having a Baby.” When Lucy reveals she’s the one who did it, Ricky bursts into tears – and so will you!
“Lucy Does A TV Commercial”
Often ranked as the greatest I Love Lucy episode ever, “Lucy Does A TV Commercial” follows Lucy as she tries to land a commercial, despite Ricky’s reservations. Of course, she does what she wants anyway, behind Ricky’s back. Though, Lucy seems to regret it when she needs to promote the fictional Vitameatavegamin health tonic. Many fans consider the commercial itself the greatest moment of I Love Lucy.
Famously, I Love Lucy starred Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley. For those who would like to stream I Love Lucy, it current streams on both Hulu and Paramount Plus.
