The Irwins are back! Terri, Bindi, and Robert Irwin, Steve Irwin’s (aka The Crocodile Hunter) family are starring in a new TV show on Animal Planet. Here’s everything you need to know about this fantastic wildlife show.
Keeping Up With The Irwins
Unfortunately, children and teens born in the past decade don’t know much about the Irwins. By the time they were growing up, Steve Irwin had passed away and his show, The Crocodile Hunter, was off the air. Thankfully, the Irwins’ new show is a chance to get to know the famous family and teach children about wildlife and conservation. And this time, it’s the kids who are hosting!
The first episode of the new show – titled Crikey! It’s the Irwins – aired on October 24. “Crikey” is a term Steve regularly used on his original show (and in life). Robert, Steve’s teenage son, says of the word, “It just means ‘wow.’ If you’re stuck on what to say, say ‘crikey.'”
The show follows Steve’s wife, Terri, and his two children, Bindi, 20, and Robert, 14, as they manage the Irwins’ Australia Zoo in Queensland. Crikey is a bit like Keeping Up With The Kardashians, only far more educational. In each family-friendly episode, Terri, Bindi, and Robert showcase a different animal (or a bunch); they teach viewers about the creature and show how to care for them. The main goal is to get kids (and adults!) excited about nature and make wild animals seem less scary. As always, they’re huge advocates of humane wildlife research, raising awareness about soon-to-be-extinct animals, and taking care of our environment.
By the way, Bindi Irwin already has a knack for reality TV! The talented young star was the winner of the 21st season of Dancing with the Stars. In one of the show’s most emotional and beautiful moments ever, Bindi dedicated a dance to her late father.
Remembering Steve Irwin
Steve Irwin died in 2006, at the age of 44. The Crocodile Hunter was diving off Port Douglas as a part of a new documentary titled Ocean’s Deadliest when he was stabbed by a stingray and died. Bindi was eight-years-old, while Robert was just two. Terri said of Steve, “I never thought anyone was tougher than Steve. He could fall out of a tree like nothing happened, but was very soft on the inside – that’s Bindi. And Robert just is Steve. It’s pretty funny watching him. [Robert’s] physical characteristics and mannerisms are exactly like his dad’s.”
The Irwins’ new show honors, and carries on, Steve’s incredible legacy. However, Steve will be more than just felt in the Crikey. The family also decided to incorporate clips from the Crocodile Hunter in every episode. “Together, we make a really great team,” Bindi said. “Plus, we have moments of reflecting on all of Dad’s amazing adventures.”
You can catch this incredible Irwins’ wildlife adventures on Animal Planet, every Sunday. Crikey! We can’t wait. You can also check out the first episode below, or on Youtube!
