One of the most iconic actresses of all time, 85-year-old Dame Judi Dench, recently became the oldest celebrity to ever grace the cover of Vogue Magazine! Read on to see the photos and discover how this incredible photo shoot came to be…
Judi Dench and Vogue
A complete retrospective, British Vogue‘s thorough piece, the article started by focusing on Dench’s beginnings on the stage. Born and raised in York, England, the actress moved to London as a teenager to study at the Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art. Even there, everyone felt sure that Dench would become a star. And they were right! This became even more apparent after a stellar performance as Ophelia in a 1957 Old Vic Theater production of Hamlet. Afterward, Dench’s turn as Lady Macbeth in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Macbeth helped her win a Laurence Olivier Award from the Society of West End Theatre Managers.
From there, Dench found it easy to transition to an iconic silver screen career. From her early film beginning in movies like Four in the Morning and Luther, to recent performances as Philomena and M in the recent 007 films, the actress has delighted audiences around the world for over five decades! So, it will come as no surprise that the British Royal Family appointed Dench Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE), in 1970 and 1988 respectively.
It’s truly no wonder that Vogue dedicated a cover to Dame Judi Dench! We’re just wondering what took so long…
The Historic Photo Shoot
While British Vogue snapped the photos before the United Kingdom went into lockdown, they did the interview afterward, via phone. So, as you might imagine, Dench talked a lot about staying positive in the situation. “I am sure I feel like everyone else, such unprecedented times are quite hard to comprehend,” she said. “What is a good thing is that it has made people aware of the predicament of others who are completely alone. If a great deal of kindness comes out of this, then that will be a plus.”
In the interview, Dench also discussed aging as a celebrity. One thing became evident: the star does not enjoy being 85-years-old. When asked about the “best part of aging” she exclaimed: “I don’t like it at all – I don’t think about it – I don’t want to think about it. They say age is an attitude… it’s horrible! I saw Mags – Maggie Smith – the other day, and she said, ‘My God, I think they’re going to stop me driving my car.’ And that seems to worry the actress, as she had to stop driving, too. “It’s the most terrible shock to your system. Ghastly. It’s terrible to be so dependent on people.”
Still, no matter her age, Dench’s stunning charisma shines through the Vogue Photos, taken by Nick Knight. “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to see Dame Judi Dench, the unassailable queen of stage and screen, starring on her first Vogue cover at the age of 85,” he captioned one of the photos, which he shared on Instagram. We agree!
