One of the most famous comics in America, Kathy Griffin, has once again made headlines. Sadly, this time around, she revealed a heartbreaking lung cancer diagnosis.
Kathy Griffin and Her Diagnosis
Comedian Kathy Griffin has some bad news for fans: she has lung cancer. As always, the legendary standup comic did not beat around the bush when taking to Instagram to reveal her diagnosis. “I’ve got to tell you guys something,” she wrote. “I have cancer. I’m about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed.”
Thankfully, the 60-year-old says that, after having nearly half a lung removed, she’s feeling better already. Meanwhile, Griffin’s dogs love having her back home! “Home from the hospital and greeted by my board certified medical PAWfessional recovery pack,” Griffin captioned a video of her dogs jumping around. Even better, since the doctors found the cancer early, the comic says the surgery should be the last step – not the first. “The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage one and contained to my left lung,” she continued. “Hopefully no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing. I should be up and running as usual in a month or less.”
However, while she’s on the mend, Griffin still has plenty of problems to face as she recovers…
Facing Lung Cancer Head-On
While the surgery went successfully, Griffin admits that the post-surgery recovery has been pretty rough. Its been even worse as the comedian had to forgo pain medication as she has a previous addiction. “To be honest, this cancer surgery was a little more than I had anticipated. Tonight will be my first night without any narcotic pain killers. Hello Tylenol, my new best friend!” she wrote on Instagram in the follow-up post. “The last time I was in a hospital was in June 2020 when I tried to take my own life and overdosed on prescription pills…With over a year clean and drug free, I now know I can do this and anything I want without those devil pills.”
Now, Griffin has started warning others about the dangers of lung cancer. Most notably, she’s told her fans to receive cancer checks every single year – even if they feel fine! “Please stay up to date on your medical checkups. It’ll save your life. XXOO, KG.”
