Earlier this month, Disney finally announced some information about The Mandalorian season 2! Along the way, the company also dropped some hints about other 2020 Disney+ releases. Here’s everything you need to know!
The Mandalorian Season 2
Finally, at long last, fans can let go of their fears: there will be a second season of The Mandalorian. The CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, confirmed earlier this month that the second season of the hit Star Wars television show will premiere sometime in October of 2020. As that’s still quite a ways out, Iger revealed little else about The Mandalorian season 2. However, he did tell journalists that the showrunners are already thinking about season 3 – and beyond!
One thing remains crystal clear: Disney+ will continue to be the home base for Star Wars. After all, last year, Disney announced it would stop releasing a new theatrical Star Wars film every year. Plus, Mandalorian is Disney+’s biggest hit, by far. Iger did announce two new shows in the works: an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor and a Rogue One prequel, possibly starring Diego Luna. So, in the foreseeable future, expect far more Wars content on Disney+.
Baby Yoda, The Star of The Mandalorian
For years when he owned Lucasfilm, George Lucas tried to create a successful Star Wars TV show. However, as he claims, he could never find a winning formula. Well, Disney did, and The Mandalorian became the first big hit for the company’s streaming service, Disney+. The first-ever Star Wars show earned not only high ratings from critics and audiences alike, but it also created a viral character: “The Child,” aka Baby Yoda.
Without a doubt, Baby Yoda turned out to be the real star of The Mandalorian, not the titular character. Adored by fans, the little creature became a meme icon and even caused a Christmas panic when Disney announced they would produce Baby Yoda dolls – just not in time for the holiday season. But official Baby Yoda dolls and The Mandalorian season 2 are not the only things Disney+ has in store for fans this year…
Marvel Comics Comes To Disney+
While Iger’s announcement only gave a few hits about The Mandalorian season 2 and future Star Wars shows, he did reveal some new information about new shows coming to Disney+ later this year. Most notably, he shared some tidbits about the upcoming Marvel shows. In case you missed it, the streaming service ran an add for all their forthcoming Marvel shows during the Super Bowl this year.
Iger didn’t reveal much about the upcoming shows, but once again announced some release dates. Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which will focus on Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes after the original Captian America retires. Meanwhile, WandaVision, a thriller-sitcom starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, will debut in December. With so many new TV shows debuting on Disney+ this year, there’s never been a better time to sign up and check it out!
