This year, Walt Disney Pictures is releasing a whopping seven films that are remakes, reboots, or sequels. One of these is a sequel to the legendary movie Mary Poppins, entitled Mary Poppins Returns. In it, Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, A Quiet Place) takes on the role of the magical nanny. Since its announcement, Mary Poppins fans everywhere have been curious: what will the sequel be like? Will any of the original stars return? Can Blunt fill the shoes of Julie Andrews? Well, earlier this month, a new trailer for the anticipated film dropped, answering many of our burning questions. Read on to find out more!

The newest trailer for Mary Poppins Returns, which will be released on December 19th, gave us a quick overview of the plot. In Returns, 25 years have passed since the events of the original film. Poppins returns to 17 Cherry Tree Lane, finding Michael (Ben Whishaw – Skyfall, The Danish Girl) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer – Shutter Island, Match Point) the children from the original. All grown up, Michael now lives with his children (Pixie Davies, Joel Dawson, and Nathanael Saleh), after their mother’s unfortunate passing.

But what about the rest of the cast? Well, they’re all quite magical! We’re looking forward to also seeing Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, and Dick Van Dyke (who starred in the original film) light up the screen.

New Movie, New Songs

Obviously, a trailer shows just bits and pieces of the movie. The trailer features a flight through the London skies, a journey underwater, and even a musical number with an animated parade incorporated into live-action scenes, just like the original! It’s hard to tell exactly what the movie will be like, but it sure seems fun and touching. The trailer also made many viewers far more confident that Emily Blunt can take over for the iconic Julie Andrews.

However, perhaps most importantly, the trailer features one of the new songs from the movie. The writers of 2007’s hit Hairspray (starring John Travolta) contributed to the soundtrack of Mary Poppins Returns. While many grew up on a “Chim Chim Cheree,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and “A Spoonful of Sugar,” the next generation will grow up with new songs! The song in the trailer is titled “Can You Imagine That?” and features a modern take on Mary Poppins‘ classic sound.

A Legacy To Live Up To

Currently, movie theaters are flooded with reboots, remakes, and sequels. And Disney is no exception. Often, these rehashes are not as exciting as the originals. However, Mary Poppins Returns seems fresh with its new perspective and incredible cast (Meryl Streep is always welcome). In the end, it doesn’t matter what the original was like – if Returns‘ script, story, and actors are right, audiences will love it. Just like audiences in 1964 loved the original Mary Poppins.
