If you’re a cord-cutter, you’ll want to listen up. These are all the best movies and shows premiering on Netflix in August 2019. From Rocky to the Dark Crystal prequel, there’s plenty to tune in to this month!

Glow (Season 3) – August 9

Glow started as an underdog in the Netflix family. The first season aired at the beginning of 2017, right as the last season of HBO’s Girls started airing. Saddened by Girls leaving the silver screen, many took comfort in Glow – another show centered around girls, their lives, strengths, fears, and ambitions. Even though it’s set in the ’80s and has a much more upbeat tone to it – and revolves around an all-women wrestling team – many called it Girls‘ spiritual sequel. The second season was a massive hit, and audiences eagerly awaited for season three. Now, everyone can binge Glow’s newest season when it debuts on August 9.

Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Mini-Series) – August 30

In an era of remakes and spin-offs, there’s no surprise that Netflix sought out a beloved property to base a project on. They found The Dark Crystal, the iconic ’80s fantasy film by Jim Henson. The CEO of The Jim Henson Company – who happens to be Lisa, Jim’s daughter – partnered up with director Jim Leterrier to bring fans a brand-new prequel to her father’s film, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.  It will be a ten-part mini-series, and will not have any CGI effects, but rather puppeteering, just like the original. The plot takes place in the realm of Thra, and revolves around the fall of the Gelfiling community, setting the stage for the events of the film.

The Rocky Franchise – August 1

That’s right, Rocky fans – the Rocky movies, all 1-5 parts, will debut on Netflix this month. The first film premiered in 1976 and became a cult movie immediately. Afterward, every sequel about the Philly fighter became a box office success. Even today, the series enjoys a loyal following. They even continued the series with the films Creed and Creed II in 2015 and 2018. Late last year, Sylvester Stallone announced he’s retiring from the Rocky franchise. So now is a great time to celebrate the life work of this legendary actor.

Mindhunter – August 16

After famous film director David Fincher adapted the hit series House of Cards for Netflix, many wondered how they would collaborate next. The director answered fans questions in 2017 when he helped create Mindhunter. The series follows the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling in the FBI and features incredible performances by the two leads, actors Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany. Fans of the show have eagerly waited almost two years for the second season of the show, which will finally premiere on August 16.

What’s Leaving Netflix This August

Like every month, some movies will be leaving Netflix in August 2019. This month, we’re sad to see some awesome films and shows go: both the original and the remake Hairspray movies, starring John Travolta, will be taken down on August 1. The Coen brothers’ No Country For Old Men (August 11), The 40-Year-Old Virgin (August 16), and the iconic cult film Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (August 20) will also leave this month.
