When Unsolved Mysteries debuted in the ’90s with host Robert Stack, it quickly became a cult classic. Now, Netflix is bringing Unsolved Mysteries back! Read on to find out all about what could become the streaming giant’s next big hit…
A ’90s Cult Classic
Without a doubt, ’80s and ’90s nostalgia is running high right now. And, from Stranger Things to the new reboot of The Babysitter’s Club, Netflix has certainly helped keep the wave of nostalgia going. Now, they’re doing so again with their reboot of Unsolved Mysteries! In fact, the executive producers of Stranger Things are also working on this new incarnation of a cult classic.
For those who missed the ’90s original, the show revolves around, well, unsolved mysteries! The original accompanied these tales of paranormal or unexplained stories with spooky synth music and horror movie-like reenactments. So, it’s really no wonder they’re bringing it back. After all, now only is ’90s nostalgia huge, as stated, but horror movies are also doing great!
Believe it or not, this is the fourth, yes you read that right, incarnation of Unsolved Mysteries. The original, hosted by the incredible Robert Stack, lasted for a decade, from 1987 to 1997. Then, for two years, 2001 and 2002, Lifetime attempted to reboot the show, after reruns of the original did very well for the channel. Unfortunately, things did not pan out. They also did not pan out for the male-centric alternative to Lifetime, SPIKE, also attempted to rebook the show in 2008. Interestingly, that Unsolved Mysteries also only lasted two years. Hopefully, Netflix will have better luck that Lifetime and SPIKE! Though from the episode descriptions, it certainly seems like they will…
The Unsolved Mysteries Reboot
Netflix has kept details of their Unsolved Mysteries under wraps. However, they promise fans of the original show will love it! “Fusing signature elements from the original series with contemporary immersive, character-driven storytelling, the 12 new episodes are rooted in the experiences of ordinary people who have lived the unthinkable — from the trauma of a loved one’s unexplained disappearance or horrific death, to the shock of a bizarre paranormal encounter,” Netflix said of the Unsolved Mysteries reboot in a press release. “Alongside detectives and journalists, family members offer clues, present theories, and identify suspects, hoping one viewer holds the key to solving the mystery.”
Along with a terrifying trailer, Netflix also released descriptions of the six episodes. For example, “13 Minutes” focuses on Patrice Endres, who “mysteriously vanished from her Cumming, Georgia, hair salon in broad daylight, during a 13-minute timeframe, leaving behind her teenage son, Pistol.” Meanwhile, for fans of the paranormal and supernatural, you’ll love “Berkshire’s UFO.” As the show explains, “on September 1, 1969, many residents in Berkshire County, Massachusetts were traumatized by a sighting of a UFO. Eyewitnesses — many just children at the time — have spent their lives trying to convince the world that what they saw was real.”
Netflix released Unsolved Mysteries at the start of July. So, what are you waiting for? Turn down the lights, pop some popcorn, and enjoy a new take on a cult classic!
