New Barney Get Out

In the era of spin-offs and remakes, even Barney, the most loved purple dinosaur, is getting his own brand new live-action movie. Not only that, but Daniel Kaluuya, the star of the hit horror film Get Out, will co-produce the film. Sounds a little odd, right? Well, here’s everything we know so far…

The Return of Barney

New Barney Get Out

It’s been over a decade since Barney & Friends left the airwaves. Still, the “I love you, you love me, we are one big family” line never entirely went away, and neither did the big purple dinosaur. So, now, the beloved character will return! Not just to the small screen, however. This time around, Barney is headed to the silver screen!

Mattel Films will be in charge of the new movie, which makes sense. The toy company will even allow its other hot properties, like Barbie and Hot Wheel, to make an appearance in the film. One announcement did raise some eyebrows, though: Daniel Kaluuya, the star of the horror film Get Out, will produce…

“Barney Disappeared Into The Shadows”

So why did a new horror legend join this children’s film? Well, in an interview, Kaluuya talked about his memories of the iconic dino. “Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood. We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

A Mattel Films representative said Kaluuya could help show a different view of Barney and could “surprise” people. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

With the announcement of this new Barney movie so fresh, little else is known. No other producers, directors, writers, or actors have been mentioned. It seems Mattel intends to make a Barney film that will work for all audiences, likely in the vein Shrek and the new Toy Story films, which were entertaining for all and kids-friendly. Who knows, with Kaluuya attached, perhaps the new Barney movie might have a little dark twist to it…

18 Years Of The Big Purple Dinosaur

To refresh your memory, or inform you, if you didn’t have children, Barney first aired in 1992. When it aired, two generations grew up watching the show. Not only in America, however, but the big purple dinosaur was also broadcast all over the world! And yes, while Barney might have been an invisible purple T-Rex, he taught children all about friendship and loving yourself and others. No one can argue that those aren’t great lessons! The last Barney episode aired in 2009, and we haven’t heard from him since – until now.
