A brand-new Home Alone movie will come to Disney+ this holiday season. That’s right! However, Home Alone fans are not all happy about the news. Read on to find out why…
New Home Alone Movie Coming To Disney+
Love the Home Alone franchise? Well, time to start getting excited then! The new film in the franchise will debut on Disney+, Disney’s streaming service, very soon. The new film, Home Sweet Home Alone, will mark the first new film in the franchise since the fourth film, 2012’s Home Alone: The Holiday Heist. Fans should expect one of the most star-studded films of the series. Saturday Night Live writers Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell will take over screenwriting duties. Meanwhile, Borat co-writer Dan Mazer will direct for the first time. The film also has one of the best comedy casts in recent memory: Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Kenan Thompson, Aisling Bea, Kenan Thompson, Pete Holmes, and Chris Parnell.
Who’s left home this time around? Well, 12-year-old child star Archie Yates, the breakout star of Jojo Rabbit, will take on the lead role. Disney describes his character, Max Mercer, as “a mischievous and resourceful young boy who has been left behind while his family is in Japan for the holidays.” However, don’t expect the traditional Home Alone plot! Instead of a duo of small-time thieves, a “married couple arrives to steal a priceless heirloom from [the Mercer’s] home.” The film will contain some throwbacks, though! Actors Devin Ratray and Macaulay Culkin will have cameos as their characters from the original film, Buzz and Kevin McCallister, respectively.
While this all seems great on paper, read on to see why some Home Alone fans are not very happy with the new movie…
Is It A Good Move?
While Home Sweet Home Alone has been on the table for a long time, it’s taken Disney quite a while to finally develop the project. In fact, former CEO Bob Iger once tried and failed to reboot the series. Even this incarnation of the reboot was plagued with problems! “It was a long shoot. It started in Canada and then got shut down and came back around because of the pandemic and stuff, so it’s been very splotchy, I guess, as far as trying to get it done is concerned,” actor Kenan Thompson remembered. Even after the shoot ended, he said he also needed to return for multiple reshoots and audio re-recordings. Now, however, after all this time, the new movie will arrive on Disney+ on November 12.
Of course, as anyone can tell you, you cannot please everyone all the time. Many fans of the original John Hughes written, Chris Columbus directed movie came to Twitter, claiming that there’s no need for another new Home Alone movie – ever! “No no no no no, we did not need a reboot. The films have been god awful since HA2. This will be no different. Jeeeeesus stop,” one of the users replied to Disney’s announcement. And it seems Columbus agrees! “Nobody got in touch with me about it,” he said recently, adding, “It’s a waste of time as far as I’m concerned.”
So, will Home Sweet Home Alone end up being another failed reboot or a hit with everyone? We’ll find out on November 12!
