In case you completely missed one of the biggest dramas of the past decades, actor Patrick Dempsey starred as neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy from season one until season 11. In that season, spoiler alert, Shepard died. Now, in the ABC show’s 17th season, however, Dempsey’s character has returned! Shepherd recently returned in a very touching scene: Pompeo’s character Meredith Grey suddenly loses consciousness and then appears in a dream with Dempsey’s character. The moment came as a genuine shock to viewers – and the team meant it as such! “Nobody knew about it other than ABC of course, some people at ABC, [showrunner] Krista [Vernoff] and then Ellen [Pompeo] and myself,” Dempsey recalled. “And then we started talking to the directors, which would be Debbie Allen — who’s amazing — and Kevin McKidd, who’s one of the directors that I worked with. And that was it.”

Everyone involved felt anxious that the secret would leak. “But we managed to keep it a secret, which was pretty phenomenal,” Dempsey said. He also said it felt right to finally bring back McDreamy. “The dynamic behind the camera had changed. There’s much more diversity within the crew. There was a nice balance, too, of equality that I was seeing. So, culturally, there were a lot of things that were different, that I thought were very positive and very inspiring, actually.” Now, fans have let the creators know how they felt about their appearance…

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy absolutely lost it when Dempsey‘s Shepard returned. “The response has been incredibly overwhelming and very moving,” he told Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “What a great opportunity for people and how great it would be for the fans, really, to see everybody reunited in this sort of bizarre way.” As the actor says, this was the perfect surprise for fans, especially after the year 2020 has been.

Speaking of 2020, both actors also made it clear that they took all the essential precautions before shooting. Both took COVID tests and wore masks when not filming, reminding everyone that wearing masks can save lives. Still, that did not affect filming! “Patrick and I have this chemistry where I think even from when we first met, for some reason it just felt like we’ve known each other for a hundred years, and it’s just the same feeling,” Pompeo said. “It’s like riding a bike, we just have a chemistry and a dynamic that’s always served us well, and I think we have a genuine affection for each other.”

Fans should not be worried that Shepard will never return to Grey’s Anatomy. Vernoff promised fans will enjoy more moments with him. “We will see more of [Derek] this season,” she teased. “This was not just a cameo. He will appear three more times.”
