The man behind Genesis and some of the biggest hits of the ’80s may need to retire soon. The legendary Phil Collins has confirmed he can no longer hold drum sticks anymore, due to a medical condition. Sadly, his health issues are stopping him from performing the music he loves…
Phil Collins’ Physical Condition
Without a doubt, Phil Collins is one of the most famous musicians of all time. From his time as the drum, and then lead singer, of Genesis to his incredible solo career, he has enjoyed hit after hit. However, recently, Collins confirmed some sad news: he can no longer hold drum sticks. When talking about the upcoming Genesis career, the musician stated his son, Nicholas Collins, 20, will take over drumming duties. On this tour, Phil confirmed, he will perform vocals only.
“I’d love to but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand. So there are certain physical things that get in the way,” the Grammy winner said. “I’m kind of physically challenged a bit which is very frustrating because I’d love to be playing up there with my son.” Even worse, Phil explained that this would likely be the last tour ever for Genesis. “We’re all men of our age, and I think to some extent, I think it probably is putting it to bed,” he said.
While fans might feel heartbroken at the news, the singer and former drummer thinks it is for the best. “I think, yeah, I think just generally for me, I don’t know if I want to go out on the road anymore,” Phil explained. In reality, however, fans really should have expected this news. Last year, Genesis announced their upcoming tour, naming it the “Last Domino?” tour. Now, the question mark seems a certainty…
Collins Eyes Retirement
There’s little question: Phil has been eyeing retirement for some time. Previously, he severely decreased his workload back in 2015, after undergoing back surgery. Then, in 2017, the singer fell and has since needed to walk with a cane and sit on a chair while on stage. Meanwhile, Phil also has an incredibly busy personal life. He has two children from his first marriage, to Andrea Bertorelli, adopted daughter Joely, 49, and son Simon, 44. Later on, Phil married Jill Tavelman in 1984, who gifted him with daughter Lily Collins. Of course, Lilly is now a famous actress, appearing in hits like To the Bone and Emily in Paris.
Most recently, Phil had two more sons with ex-wife Orianne Cevey: Nicholas, 20, and Matthew, 16. He’s one of the busiest parents in all of Hollywood! So, while this is not for sure Phil Collins’ last tour, it would certainly be understandable if he retired. We wish him all the best!
