Recently, news broke that actor Robert Pattinson, most famous for his role as Edward in the Twilight series, will take on the part of Batman. As always, Batman fans and internet commenters had some strong opinions about yet another actor donning the cape and cowl. Here’s everything you need to know about Pattison and the upcoming Batman film…
Robert Pattinson: The Next Batman?
You might recognize Robert Pattinson from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, where he played the noble Cedric Diggory, or recent dramatic turns, like Good Time. However, Pattinson is most famous for the vampire franchise, Twilight, where he scored the huge role of the undead, teenage heartthrob, Edward Cullen. Recently, the actor has stayed relatively under the radar, keeping to the indie and arthouse scene – until now. Now, though, we have news of his return to Hollywood: British Pattinson will probably be the next Batman, directed by Matt Reeves (director of the last two Planet of the Apes).
Pattinson has stayed the number one choice for a while, and while negotiations are still going on, he will most likely take on the role of Bruce Wayne. Ben Affleck previously portrayed Batman, but left last year. So, with Affleck leaving, it gave Reeves the chance to pick his own dark, crime-fighting superhero. While we don’t have many plot details, we do know the film’s release date: June 25, 2021, with filming scheduled to start late this year or early 2020. Fans have also received the film’s two villains: Catwoman and the Penguin!
However, it’s not only Batman that made Pattinson appear in headlines. This year, the actor has four film releases, including a Netflix film, The King. The actor is also starring alongside Willem Dafoe in the highly anticipated The Lighthouse, from director Robert Eggers (The Witch). Lighthouse premiered at Cannes Festival last month to rave reviews. Still, it’s certainly the upcoming Batman film that has most talking…
People Are Feeling Things
First, we should state: Pattinson still isn’t locked in. Other options for the bat dude is Nicholas Hoult, and rumors have it he’s still a strong candidate.
However, if Pattison does receive the role, as the last two actors to step into the Batman’s shoes are Affleck and the legendary Christian Bale. Still, despite the lack of confirmation, the internet is the internet, and many people have strong feelings about Pattinson. Some say it’s a downgrade after Bale and Affleck, that it’s a “gimmick,” or that the actor in a bad match for the role. While they might be right, we should point out, people said the exact same things about Heath Ledger as The Joker. Now, Ledger’s take on the Clown Prince of Crime is considered one of the greatest of all time.
Others love the unexpected choice; it might even bring new fans to movie theaters. Pattinson fans also have mixed thoughts: on the one hand, the role of Batman will expose him to new audiences; on the other, it means he will go mainstream again, after he avoided it for so many years.
We will keep you update on the Robert Pattinson/Batman saga. And until then, stay safe; Batman still isn’t confirmed…
