First, it started with ’80s nostalgia, thanks to shows like Stranger Things. Now, the ’90s are making a comeback. So, it should come as no surprise that one of Nickelodeon’s first big hits, the beloved kids’ cartoon Rugrats, will return in 2021!
Watch Rugrats Reboot In 2021
That’s right! Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie, Phil, and Lil will return in the Rugrats reboot! Not only will they go on brand new adventures, but they will also find themselves in a brand-new animation style. However, not everything will be new. The original cast, including E.G. Daily, Nancy Cartwright, and Cree Summer, will return. Still, while the cast will remain, showrunners have made some serious changes to the characters. Most noticeably, Phil and Lil’s mom, Betty, will be portrayed as an out and proud lesbian single mom.
“Anyone who watched the original show may have had an inkling Betty was a member of the alphabet mafia,” actress Natalie Morales, who will voice Betty in the Rugrats reboot, said. “Betty is a single mom with her own business who has twins and still has time to hang out with her friends and her community, and I think it’s just so great because examples of living your life happily and healthily as an out queer person is just such a beacon for young queer people who may not have examples of that.”
Meanwhile, while the characters have changed, the stories will remain the same. Expect plenty of adventures and pop culture references! Excited for the Rugrats reboot? Read on to see how you can watch it…
Changing The Characters
The new, 3D animated show will premiere on Paramount’s streaming service, Paramount Plus, on May 27. And it seems Paramount feels quite confident about the Rugrats reboot: they have already ordered an entire season of 26 episodes. After the show airs on Paramount Plus in 2021, it will air on other channels, namely Nickelodeon.
For those who don’t know, a new viewer can subscribe to Paramount Plus for $6 a month with ads, or save a few bucks by paying $60 for the year. To watch the shows without ads, you’ll have to pay $10 a month or $100 a year, again. Both plans have a free seven-day trial, so you can try out the streaming service for a bit without committing. Of course, the Rugrats reboot is far from the only content on Paramount Plus. If you’re a fan of old Nickelodeon shows, it not only has classics like all of SpongeBob SquarePants, but also plenty of other upcoming ’90s reboots, like iCarly. Plus, with lots of movies and T.V. shows, there’s something for everyone!
