With another year wrapping up, Spotify once again shared the most-streamed songs, albums, and artists of the year. However, the end of 2019 does not merely mean another year over. It’s also the end of the second decade of the second millennium! As we head into a brand-new version of the “Roaring Twenties,” it’s natural to take a look back and see what the highlights of the decade were. So, with the decade coming to a close, Spotify also decided to release the top listen-earners of the 2010s! Here are the earworms and stars we could not get enough of…
Spotify Wraps Up 2019
For anyone with a Spotify account or radio, it likely comes as no surprise that the most-streamed artist of the year was Post Malone, with other 6.5 billion streams worldwide. Yes, “billion,” with a B. However, Malone’s accolades do not end there. He also managed to get a top-three song, “Sunflower,” and a top-three album, Hollywood’s Bleeding! Malone broke a new record this year, becoming the first artist to manage to earn a spot in all three of Spotify’s top three music categories. And with another album on the horizon, expect to see Malone back here next year!
Also another given, the second most-streamed artist is Billie Eilish. This incredible singer-songwriter has managed to become a hit-maker and fashion icon despite being just 17-years-old! Her first album – WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? – earned over 6 billion streams this year! It also became the first female artist to have an album in the most-streamed list. Meanwhile, Eilish’s biggest single, “Bad Guy,” became the second most-listened-to song of 2019. She even managed to dethrone Ariana Grande as the most-streamed female artist!
Speaking of, let’s not forget Grande. Her album thank u, next is the third most-streamed album, while her song “7 rings” made it into the top five songs – making this her second year in Spotify Top 10 list. Rounding out the lists: the top song of the year is “Señorita” By Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello with over 1 billion streams. After all of these artists (Malone, Eilish, Grande), the fifth most-streamed song was “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus.
Wrapping Up The Decade
Without a doubt, the 2010s were an interesting decade for music. We watched as genres from around the world, like Latin, Modern Bollywood, and K-Pop, took over the American charts. Meanwhile, the 2010s also ushered in a new era of female artists who dominated the charts, like Taylor Swift and Lizzo. Still, it seems like no one could take on the likes of Ed Sheeran and Drake. Here are the most-streamed artists and songs of the decade:
