The outstanding works of Studio Ghibli are still entertaining the new generation of anime lovers and simple movie fans. When it came out with Whisper of the Heart in 1995, the animated film was a fresh look at the young love of two teenagers. Fortunately, it gave hope and romance a new twist. In 2022, the trailer for the sequel is already out – the continuation of the story was filmed in live-action! While the original piece garnered a lot of attention and money at the box office, it’s still a clearly underrated one when compared to other Studio Ghibli movies such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and  and the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away. Whisper of the Heart isn’t heavy on the fantastical elements often associated with the animation film studio. Yet, the way the creators look at a simple story of two humans is fascinating. Soon after the start, the movie feels familiar and, most importantly, relatable.

Had no idea this brilliant creation existed? You can still find it on HBO Max and take a close look at the plot. Here are some of the important details: “A chance encounter with a mysterious cat sends Shizuku, a quiet schoolgirl, on a quest for her true talent. Together with Seiji, a boy determined to follow his dreams, and enchanted by The Baron, a magical cat figurine who helps her listen to the whispers of her heart, Shizuku embarks on a life-changing adventure that takes her beyond the boundaries of her imagination,” the official plot reads.

The two main characters work together very well. After Shizuku and Seiji get to know each other, they battle failures and uncertainties hand-in-hand, motivating each other and supporting every endeavor. And when one feels strong and dedicated, the other gets the same power. That’s how Shizuku inspired Seiji to start reading different genres of books. Breaking the usual approach on teenage love, the two characters become friends first, enjoy each other’s company and grow very close. Some wouldn’t even consider that a relationship – yet, the romance is in the air. And when you finish that Studio Ghibli masterpiece, you’re curious if the couple lasted through the years, right? Fans can remain calm. So far, the approved live-action sequel to Whisper of the Heart shows that Shizuku and Seiji are still loving each other’s company.

Moreover, the short trailer showcases many sweet moments, as well as some flashbacks to the past, when they were still young. That said, the sequel will take place 10 years later. Furthermore, it proposes that the two haven’t seen each other for such a long time. Still, they keep in touch by letters, writing them by hand, and soon gear up to reunite in person. Many fans are excited to see how everything works out for the couple when they are older and a lot more experienced in life. Is Shizuku writing books now? Will Seiji play the violin professionally? All these questions stand.

Thankfully, we’ll find out in October. The live-action will come out at the opening of Studio Ghibli’s theme park around November in Japan.
