The Affair. A brilliant television drama from Showtime we’ve fallen in love with. Every season we think the writers can’t top themselves – and then they do! So buckle up and get ready for an emotional roller coaster as we recap the latest episodes. Warning: spoilers ahead for those who aren’t caught up with The Affair.
The Unique Concept of The Affair
The Affair was created by the developers of HBO’s hit-drama In Treatment, Hagai Levi and Sarah Treem. After its first broadcast in October of 2014, the show immediately became a favorite of critics and viewers alike. Few shows before it dove into the deep darkness of extramarital affairs the way The Affair does.
The series revolves around two married people, Noah and Alison, who begin an affair after they meet at a diner. Alison is trying to pull her life together, a task she finds difficult after the tragic loss of her son. Her failing marriage to husband Cole doesn’t help either. Noah, on the other hand, seems happily married with four children. However, on the inside, he is frustrated with his life, especially his wealthy and dominating father-in-law. The series is one of highs and lows. We fall in love with the characters, only to witness the horrible mental and physical effects of the affair.
However, what truly sets The Affair apart from other shows is its episodic structure. In each episode, we watch the same scene multiple times, each time through the eyes of a different character. This storytelling device allows us to dive into each character’s inner world, making their pain, jealousy, and regrets feel all the more real.
Alison’s Miserable Season Journey
Even if you’re not caught up, its safe to say Alison Bailey (Ruth Wilson) is the primary focus of the show. However, here’s where the spoiler-free section stops! In The Affair’s most recent episode, Alison certainly got a terrible, and shocking, end to her character arc, despite never uttering a syllable!
A quick season recap: Alison’s life is spiraling downhill. She finally meets her father, James, only to have him reveal her mother never allowed him to make contact. Soon enough, we learn why her mother never allowed James to make contact. Alison learns her mother got pregnant with her after being raped by James, a crime was never reported. You might think to yourself, that’s enough suffering for one character. But boy, we’re nowhere near the end.
After learning James is her mother’s rapist, she seeks the comfort and security of her current boyfriend, Ben. Instead, she meets his never-before-revealed wife. Afterward, Alison flies to see her ex-boyfriend Noah (the genius Dominic West), only to be groped on her plane journey. Shockingly, she’s the one who gets arrested, instead of her attacker.
The Latest Shocking Reveal
In the latest episode, Alison went missing. When the news breaks, Noah and Alison’s ex-husband, Cole (Joshua Jackson), go searching for her. They even head to her already-estranged father’s to look for her. Then, the news arrives: her body has been found. Alison drowned herself. Now that’s a heart-wrenching twist we never saw coming!
Alison’s death will obviously change the entire course of The Affair. While only two episodes remain this season, Showtime recently renewed it for a fifth season. However, many fans are wondering how the show will continue without its main character. We don’t know where the show will go next season, or even this season, but we’re excited to find out!
