After the TV drama announcement at the SuperBowl 2022, a lot of old-school fans were drawn to the new Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power obsession. Take a look at the new locations and characters surrounding the release…
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Is Coming to the U.K.
Back in 2017, Amazon purchased the global rights to the TV adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. Yet, almost five years passed before the service revealed any news regarding Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. During SuperBowl 2022, the first trailer for the upcoming series was presented to the public. Of course, it sent fans into an exciting spiral, especially after outstanding film adaptations. Recently, Amazon executives shared some news regarding the location of the filming! First of all, eight episodes of the series will take place in New Zealand. That’s also where the original films got produced. As for season two, it will be filmed in the U.K. “We’re excited that season two production is coming home to the UK so that’s a really exciting moment,” said Dan Grabiner, Head of UK Originals at Amazon.
“We looked at the footprint of our production in the UK and it’s literally everywhere. A lot in the highlands in Scotland, we filmed at the very tip of Cornwall. We’re very proud of that.” In addition, a completely new facility will be dedicated to the filming of the second season as well – a studio in Shepperton. Apart from a long lease of the Shepperton space, Grabiner believes that Amazon will continue partnering up with different studios and locations in the U.K. for the best result on the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Exciting Character Release
Of course, filming location is not the only groundbreaking reveal from the series creators. They also shed some light on new characters presented in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The first group is the Harfoots. They are Middle-earth’s Second Age ancestors of the Hobbits. While J.R.R. Tolkien explained that Hobbits didn’t play a big role in Middle-earth before Bilbo Baggins found the One Ring, the show creators couldn’t leave them out. That said, Harfoots are very similar to the Hobbits from Lord of the Rings films. “Does it feel like Middle-earth if you don’t have hobbits or something like hobbits in it?” wondered The Rings of Power co-showrunner Patrick McKay. “Two lovable, curious harfoots, played by Megan Richards and Markella Kavenagh, encounter a mysterious lost man whose origin promises to be one of the show’s most enticing enigmas.”
Also, McKay and JD Payne opened up about the second important character, Celebrimbor, the Elf who created the Rings! “We’re dealing with one of the greatest villains that’s ever been created in Sauron,” Payne commented. “And one of the central figures in the story is the character of Celebrimbor. He’s an Elven smith who was manipulated into helping create the Rings Of Power. We’re excited to be bringing him to Middle-earth. He’s very mysterious.” Played by Charles Edwards, Celebrimbor is debuting on TV screens in 2022. Previously, he was seen in the Shadow Of Mordor and Shadow Of War video games.
Fans can tune in and see all these characters in person in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video on September 2.
