Goodbye 2018, and hello 2019! The past year was filled with huge movies which audiences couldn’t wait to see – from another Star Wars to the newest Avengers. And, unlike previous years, in 2018 moviegoers came out in droves, with US theaters making an extra billion dollars this year than last.
However, what does this mean for the future? If you’re wondering what the most anticipated movies of 2019 are, we’ve got the answers. They aren’t that different from the biggest hit of 2018, but they’re sure to get you excited!
The #1 Most Anticipated Movie
Recently, USA Today and Fandango (a movie ticketing service) conducted a poll, to definitively figure out which movie audiences are most amped for in 2019. The results aren’t shocking: they vary from Disney’s new remakes to the upcoming Marvel movies.
The most anticipated movie of 2019 is Avengers: Endgame, the fourth entry in the Avengers franchise. The third, which came out in 2018, grossed over a billion dollars worldwide and ended with beloved Marvel characters – Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America – disappearing into thin air, so the tension is high. Erik Davis, of Fandango, said audiences left the movie theaters confused. “Do they bring these characters back? This film is going to set the stage for whatever the next iteration of these Marvel movies is.” The audience’s desire for answers makes the new Avengers not only a highly anticipated film but also an important one. If it fails to satisfy audiences’ curiosity, it could leave many unhappy.
In further Marvel news, people are looking forward to the new Captain Marvel movie (#2 on the list), starring Brie Larson. Marvel isn’t the only superhero game in town, however. The Joker – which takes place in the DC Universe and stars Joaquin Phoenix as the psychotic clown – made it to #10.
The Year Of Disney?
Many may wonder why the newest Star Wars is not the most anticipated movie of 2019. The reason the Star Wars sequel landed at number three, is because there was a Star Wars overload in 2018. The latest film, Solo, released just months after the last Star Wars film, failed to click with audiences. However, David reckons that once we catch a glimpse of “a new lightsaber battle, that changes.”
Even though the Avengers made it to the number one spot, there’s a clear winner in 2019: Disney. Out of ten places, Disney snagged seven of them, including Star Wars, Toy Story 4 (#5), The Lion King (#7), and Aladdin (#8). Davis says 2019 might be the year of Disney, and even Disney’s “biggest year.” In addition to the releases everyone’s waiting for, there’s also Frozen 2 in the works – and most people don’t even know it will be released November 2019. (Not to mention Disney’s 2019 launch of their new streaming site, Disney+).
