TV talk shows and celebrities go hand in hand; one can not succeed without the other. When tuning in, we expect the talk show – and the host themselves – to be welcoming, and the guest to be equally warm. So when we witness a celebrity or a host stepping out of line, talking about odd or inappropriate subjects or jumping on the couch (ahem Tom Cruise ahem) – it it such a strange sight we sometimes can’t believe our eyes. Here are five shocking celeb appearances on talk shows:

Tom Cruise on The Oprah Winfrey Show (2005)

WHAT. A. CLASSIC. This list was definitely inspired by the Mission Impossible actor whose appearance on the talk show left us all shocked (and a bit concerned for Cruise…). Even 13 years later, we’re still uneasy and confused – Cruise jumped on the couch and declared his love for his then-fiancee Katie Holmes. The interview is a gem; especially when we see Oprah’s stunned reaction (reflecting our emotions, really).

Crispin Glover on David Letterman’s Late Night Show (1987)

This Back to the Future actor had one of the most awkward moments of his career on the Late Show. Glover seemed to be fully immersed in himself; like Letterman wasn’t even there – he read newspaper clippings about himself and even invited the host to arm wrestle. Letterman’s reply was to walk off stage. Legit, David.

Cher on David Letterman’s Late Night Show (1986)

Legendary Cher’s interview by Letterman started okay-ish (the host told her she smelled weird). There might have been some unfinished business between the two, as they ping-ponged back and forth with passive-aggressive complaints. Letterman asked Cher why it took her four years to come on the show, and Cher, being Cher, replied coolly that the production “didn’t pay her hotel bill” (Letterman’s show paid half of the expenses). The interview reached a peak point when the star called the host “an a**hole”.

Jimmy Kimmel on Jay Leno’s 10 at 10 (2010)

Once upon a time Jay Leno had a talk show – 10 at 10 – which aired at 10pm and every time he asked a different celebrity 10 different questions. In 2010 rival TV talk show host Jimmy Kimmel appeared on 10 at 10. It was one of the most cringe-worthy interviews ever. Kimmel mocked Leno about his show. And it got to a point where Leno asked Kimmel crude questions, to which Kimmel replied he’s not going to answer because his mother’s watching the show. He then said – “Oh, wait a minute, the show’s canceled. Nobody’s watching the show.” So much drama! The two reconciled years later, but we will never forget this awkward talk show moment. Ever.

Shirley McClaine on David Letterman’s Late Show (1988)

Seems like there’s something about Letterman’s show that produces awkward and/or shocking interviews year after year. In 1988, actress Shirley McClaine attempted to explain her reincarnation beliefs to the host (Letterman’s face just made everything more cringe-worthy). Then she tried to do some sort of meditation on Letterman’s head by yanking his hair. Letterman counted down to commercials – we don’t know if it was planned or the host just really, really needed the interview to be cut short.
