This week, Captain Marvel finally arrives in theaters. Now in its fourth phase, the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to break box office and cultural records. And the studio is just getting started! With Marvel Studios releases scheduled through 2022, let’s take a look at what’s coming up. We’ll also take a look at some of the movies rumored to be coming soon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Movies: The Gift That Keeps On Giving
It’s confirmed: the Marvel universe is the most successful franchise, cinematically, ever. Throughout the years, the films have made a whopping $18 billion worldwide ($4 billion in 2018 alone)! Additionally, Marvel is currently in uncharted waters. Never before has a film studio attempted to create such a massive, multi-film story. It seems like the possibilities are endless for these creators and showrunners – and it sure looks like nothing can stop them.
However, it’s not only that Marvel broke box office records. They also broke previously-held cultural ideas as well. This week’s Captain Marvel will be the first female-lead Marvel movie. Meanwhile, last year’s Black Panther featured an incredible African-American cast and also earned seven Academy Award nominations (winning three). Marvel movies seem to be the gift that keeps on giving. But what does the future hold?
Future Plans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
It is unknown what exactly the future will look like for Marvel movies. With the departure of some of the Universe’s biggest stars, the assembly of the Avengers, as we currently know it, will come to an end in April. However, Disney will likely produce some spin-offs and maybe even some remakes in the next decade. While this may seem premature, it’s not out of the question. Remember, Spider-Man received two remakes since 2007’s Spider-Man 3. However, thanks to some recent confirmation by Disney, we have some idea of what the future may hold for Marvel.
In late 2018, Disney, who owns Marvel, announced it’s launching an online streaming platform, Disney+. Disney+ will feature a variety of old and new shows and movies, competing with Netflix, Hulu, and the likes. This really gives endless options to creators – there is now a place for new Marvel movies and shows to be formed, without the need of cinemas, other channels, or streaming sites. But this doesn’t mean that Disney+ will be the only place to check out the latest Marvel movies!
By July 2022, Marvel will release at least 12 (confirmed) Marvel movies to cinemas. On average, three new Marvel movies will release every year! And 2019 is no exception: Captain Marvel (March 8), The Avengers: Endgame (April 26), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5). These three films are the only confirmed Marvel releases currently scheduled. Marvel has also announced nine confirmed release dates, but without the titles attached. They love to keep things a secret! However, rumors and industry sources provide fans with some idea of what is to come. It’s no secret Black Panther 2 is in the works – perhaps it is the unknown Marvel movie coming in May 2022. Rumor has it a Black Widow movie starring Scarlett Johansson is also on the list, as is a Doctor Strange sequel.
