Howdy, Walking Dead fans! For those who don’t know, the ninth season of the hit horror show will air on October 7th on AMC. For you forgetful fans, let’s go through a quick recap of the previous season. Here’s what we know about the new season and what we expect from it. Oh, and do expect spoilers if you’re still binging the show. Read on at your own risk!
Where We Left Off
For those who have already forgotten, here’s a quick recap of season eight’s ending. The season ended with a subtle hint that Maggie may very well become the show’s new villain. She decided to let Negan live, after all he’s done to the group, including killing Glenn and Abraham! Ultimately, however, Rick eventually chooses to spare the lives of Maggie and Negan.
Currently, not much is known about how their storylines will progress. However, at the end of the finale, we got a glimpse of what’s to come. Negan ended the season in a hospital bed, with Rick and Michonne choking him, teasing him, and reminding him that he’ll rot in a cell for his crimes.
Naming Maggie and Glenn’s Baby
At this year’s Comic-Con, fans glimpsed a sneak peek of season nine when the first teaser debuted. Here’s one heartbreaking detail you might have missed, though: Maggie and Glenn’s baby’s name is…Hershel. The couple named their child after Hershel Greene, Maggie’s deceased father. Well, at least now we know to bring the Kleenex because the writers have apparently decided to just toy with our feelings!
Hershel Sr. was brutally killed in season four by the Governor, and by the end of the eighth season, Maggie is the only one of her family left alive. Sad enough yet? Baby Hershel will begin the season as a one-year-old, as there is a significant time jump between season eight and nine. We know everyone, including this writer, is rooting for this new Walking Dead family!
In the Walking Dead comics, Maggie also decides to name her boy after her father (the time jump exists there as well). There have been plenty of times where the show has, rightfully or wrongfully, deviated from the comic plot line. Not this time, though.
Lauren Cohan, who portrays Maggie, recently explained her character’s new arc: “We have baby Hershel, named after [her] dad, and a big part of what Maggie is focusing on is building a world for him. A big part of her conflict this year is finding peace of mind”.
The Future Of Maggie (And Cohan)
In real life, after contract negotiations between Cohan and AMC, news broke that Cohan will not appear in every episode of the ninth season. She’ll appear in a few episodes and make her way out of the show. However, Cohan told Andy Cohen that Maggie’s story is “open. It’s not finished.” We’re not entirely sure what this means – will she come back for a later season? Will another actress replace her?
Cohan has a new drama on ABC, Whiskey Cavalier, that will air in 2019. It is likely due to this that she cannot fully return due to scheduling or contractual obligations. We sincerely wish all the best to Cohan. However, we think that if Whiskey is not renewed for a second season, Cohan might just return to the Walking Dead.
