Whether you dreamt of it or not, Wednesday on Netflix has just become a reality. No, we’re not talking about a day of the week. Rather, one of the most iconic spooky characters, Wednesday Addams, and she is coming to the streaming platform!
At Last, Wednesday On Netflix!
Gather your hair in braids and order a classic Tumblr-style black dress with a white collar – Wednesday Addams is joining the Netflix family. The new twist on the character comes in a form of an eight-episode TV series directed by one and only Tim Burton. What’s also known about Wednesday on Netflix, besides the unique creator? Well, the character, who’s been widely popular since her debut in 1938, will be involved in a more classic live-action, coming-of-age scenario. Despite the lack of details from the streaming giant, some fans are speculating that this time, Wednesday will have something else but homicide on her mind… love!
Originally announced in February 2022 on Twitter, Wednesday will be a student at Nevermore Academy, who’s (obviously) tied up in some supernatural stuff. The series will showcase “Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago—all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships,” Bloody Disgusting wrote. Clearly progressing from the original TV show in 1964, as well as the classic ‘90s movies, Wednesday takes on the role of a rom-com character, who still has that mysterious veil surrounding her. The cast is also changing… Who’s playing the goth teen this time?
Just in time for the spooky season, Jenna Ortega, the 19-year-old actress, is changing her bubbly personality into a darker, spookier one, to match Wednesday perfectly! Her appearance as the main character was announced in May 2022, and Ortega herself opened up about the new role on Instagram. “New chapter. Hope I can do Wednesday Addams justice. *snaps twice*” she wrote. Indeed, she’s already proven to have an array of talents, as well as outstanding versatility. So, there’s no doubt she’ll nail the role of Wednesday . Moreover, the teasers showcasing Ortega’s transformation only drive the point forward! Christina Ricci, who played the role in the 1991 and 1993 film adaptations of The Addams Family, is joining the cast in a completely new role. She’ll be playing Ms. Thornhill, a teacher at Nevermore Academy. Yay for the old-school fans.
As for the other cast members, they include Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Gomez and Morticia Addams, as well as Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams. Interestingly enough, the latter is also making his acting debut! Fred Armisen will be playing Uncle Fester, per the NYCC 2022 reveal. Now, we already know who’s behind all that… Burton. The man, the legend, who created titles like Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and The Nightmare Before Christmas – he’s just perfect for this reiteration of Wednesday on Netflix.
When can we finally see the show in action? It will debut on the streaming platform on November 23. Mark your calendars!
