No royal event is complete without two things: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and hats. Oh, those hats! You might wonder why in the 21st Century women attending royal events wear hats and headpieces. Apparently, like everything else that has to do with the royal family, it’s a tradition: women attendees must wear hats to royal events!  It comes from the tradition in British society that upper-class women and Royals didn’t show their hair in public, a tradition that existed up until the 1950s. To put it simply: it’s a tradition which isn’t going anywhere any time soon.  We can’t get enough of these fashion moments.  So here they are, the most outrageous hats worn to royal events!

Princess Beatrice of York

No royal hat list would be complete without Princess Beatrice! Daughter of Prince Andrew, cousin of Princes Will and Harry, and eighth in line to the throne – Princess Beatrice is known to wear show-stopping headpieces. The most iconic hat is the one pictured on the right – worn to Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011. The hat got so much attention she later sold it on eBay and raised $130,000 for charity.  Another iconic moment was in 2008 when the Princess of York wore a butterfly hat (designed by Philip Treacy) to Peter Philips and Autumn Kelly’s wedding. Talk about making an entrance!

This gorgeous, enormous orange hat was worn by British actress Kathrine Kelly to the royal wedding of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall in 2011. Designed by H’atelier, it matched her pink dress and most certainly helped shade her face  (and probably a few other peoples’)  from the sun. Kelly is known to be a fashionista and picks interesting outfits. This hat has to be one of the all-time boldest pieces worn.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge

Ever since Kate entered our lives, she’s become the media and peoples’ favorite royal. Beautiful, gracious and kind-hearted, the Duchess of Cambridge always appears in modest, simple outfits that fit impeccably. Kate looks amazing and shows her support for female British designers by wearing their clothes to major events. Another trait she has picked up is wearing beautiful hats, even though sometimes they seem a bit overwhelming, like the one pictured on the left, worn at  Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall’s wedding in 2011. We noticed that her hats keep getting bigger and bigger as time passes by. Continue to keep it classy, Kate – we love you!

Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo

This hat… no one can just move on with their lives after seeing it. This preposterous headpiece was worn by Duchess Infanta Elena of Spain to the wedding of Princess Alexia of Greece and Carlos Morales Quintana in 1999. It’s just one of those pieces you have to look at again and again; it has everything on it, it’s a bold and it’s a fluffy fashion statement. We want to curl up and take a short nap on this feathery hat and maybe add it as a decorative piece to our living room.

Queen Elizabeth II

Did you really think we’d end the list without Her Majesty?! Turns out Queen Elizabeth is also the queen of hats; she knows how to pick ’em. It’s a known fact Her Royal Highness wears every outfit only once, and yes, the Queen loves color and knows how to rock it. Check out the pink flowery hat she wore to a meeting with the staff at the Dover Ferry terminal (pictured left). Her Majesty proved she looks amazing while sporting a more traditional headpiece (pictured center) on her visit to the St. Giles Cathedral. Pictured left, she’s seen judging everyone silently in a fashion show at De Montfort University while wearing this hot pink and black color-blocked outfit. Anna Wintour, who?
