As the year is winding down, its natural to take a look back at the year. And there were some incredible, odd, and hilarious moments from 2018 we’ll never forget. However, in a year so stuffed with news and massive pop culture events, it’s easy to forget some of the year’s most viral stories. So here are the best viral moments from 2018 you may have already forgotten about:
The Oscars’ “Most Popular Category”
2018 was a turning point year in Hollywood’s biggest night, the Academy Awards. However, with all the current host drama, you may not remember another big Oscar moment! Earlier this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences added a new category to the show – “Most Popular.” The Academy established the category to bridge the gap between what critics adore and ordinary viewers go to see, one that seems to widen every year.
Unfortunately for fans of the category, the backlash was swift and harsh. Industry members and Oscars fans slammed the idea, pointing out that the Oscars are not about what’s popular but, instead, what is best. So, less than a month after establishing the “Most Popular” category, the Academy scrapped it. They did note, however, that the category could reappear next year. So, we’ll see!
The Justin Bieber Eating a Burrito Wrong Photo
This is one of the moments from 2018 that truly embodies the spirit of the internet. A few months ago, a picture of Justin Bieber emerged online that outraged foodies everywhere. The photo shows Bieber sitting in a park, alone, eating a burrito. While this might seem like no big deal, it was how the singer was eating the burrito that offended many. He was eating the burrito sideways! Soon, the mainstream media got ahold of the photo, and it went viral. Then, a few weeks later, the YouTube channel “The Yes Theory” revealed that they faked the picture. The channel hired a lookalike actor and staged the photo, all to see if it would go viral. It did, and we hope that people felt silly for minding so much how people eat their Mexican food.
Once again, the internet provides. Without the internet, we would’ve never heard of the Yodeling Kid, aka 11-year-old Mason Ramsey. In April this year, user Sonell Official uploaded the video above to Youtube. It shows Ramsey, well, yodeling in his local Walmart. His talent, his charisma, and the genius idea of yodeling in a Walmart created one of the best moments from 2018 – and paved the way for Ramsey’s singing career. Ramsey even ended up performing at Coachella, one of the biggest music festivals in the world. Yodel on, Mason!
The Yodeling Kid was not the only one to perform at Coachella! Beyoncé and her hubby Jay-Z stepped closer to world domination with their second On The Run tour this year, plus an incredible hit album, Everything Is Love. However, the most noted performance, by far, was Queen B’s Coachella performance. She dominated the stage as the main act and put on an incredible show – which made people forget there were other performances by other artists! So here’s to Beyoncé’s takeover of Coachella.
The Yanny/Laurel Debate
In 2017, there was the “blue and black” or “white and gold” dress. This year, it was the Yanny/Laurel debate that split families and friendships throughout the world. A video with a single word was uploaded, and some people heard “Yanny,” and some heard “Laurel.” It is, in fact, an auditory illusion! If you want to explore the science behind this, and have a little fun, The New York Times made a great tool so you can hear both and find out why!
Prince Harry and Meghan’s Royal Wedding
It is crazy to say that someone forgot about the royal wedding of the year! However, with everything else happening – the couple expecting a baby, moving out of Windsor castle, and so much more – it’s easy to forget Meghan and Harry tied the knot this past spring! Millions upon millions of people tuned in to the beautiful wedding on May 19, 2018.
We’re looking forward to reporting on a new royal baby in 2019!
Even More Viral Moments From 2018
Here are some other viral moments from 2018, which you’ve likely already forgotten. It’s not that they weren’t important, but rather, more important things happened!
Toys R’ Us shut down; a Bitcoin mania took over the nation; there was that Superbowl selfie kid; dozens of remakes and reboots aired on TV and in the cinemas; McDonald’s brought back their Szechuan sauce for a hot minute; IHOP changed their name to IHOB; Kylie Jenner hid her pregnancy and then uploaded a video dedicated to her baby, which now has 78 million views; Khloé and Kim Kardashian also had babies this year; oh, and there were those tiny movies releases titled Black Panther and The Avengers: Infinity War…the list goes on!
