On April 21, Queen Elizabeth turned 91-years-old. Sadly, this time, her thoughts were not on a nice day. Instead, it was the first time in over 70 years that the Queen celebrated her birthday without her late husband, Prince Philip. The Prince passed away on April 9, 2021, at the age of 99. In her sadness, Queen Elizabeth penned a letter to the British public, a rare view into her emotional state.

“While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world,” The Queen wrote in the letter. “My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days. We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.”

The loss of Prince Philip leaves behind much more than sadness. It will mean a new era for the British Royal Family…

Taking On Prince Philip’s Duties

Even though Prince Philip retired from official royal duties in 2017, that does not mean the Royal Family will not reel from the loss of the Duke. Still, there’s always work to be done for the family. Early reports suggest that Prince Charles will take over Philip’s duties of helping the Queen with whatever she needs.

Though, even Queen Elizabeth understands that there’s not much time to grieve. “She’s got on with her work, and in fact, straight after the funeral, she went back to her official papers and got them done,” said ABC News royalty consultant Alistair Bruce. “I think for the Queen, she’s got to change with the way in which her family supports her, but she’ll just get on as the heartbeat of the nation. She’s got a wonderful family around her that will support and help with the work. It will just be a different way, but the same way.”

Of course, the death of Prince Philip is just the most recent of many Royal Family shake-ups. Most famously, Prince Harry and his wife, actress Meghan Markle, left the Royal Family in 2019.

So, what else will change in the coming months? As stated, Royal experts say to expect Prince Charles to start learning the ropes of Kinghood from his mother and take a more active role in the monarchy. Meanwhile, Princess Anne, the only daughter, and the youngest, Prince Edward, are also expected to expand their roles. These are roles that have already grown in the wake of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure.

Given the amount of work, it’s unclear if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will help pick up the slack. While Harry attended the funeral, Meghan Markle did not, raising many eyebrows. Only time will tell how the British Royal Family deals with these new challenges.
