Thanks to shows like Cupcake Wars and Cake Wars, odd wedding cakes are all the rage. However, one Pennsylvania like takes the cake (pun intended) for making the most unusual wedding cake ever: a life-sized deer cake, complete with antlers. Here’s the story behind arguably the most impressive wedding cake ever…
The Deer Cake Request
Every bride and groom wants their special day to be…well, special! As well as unique, memorable, fun, worthwhile, sweet, and a laundry list of other things. And a couple from Pennsylvania managed to complete all this with just one wedding cake!
The bakery at Shady Maple Farm Market, located in East Earl, Pennsylvania, received the most unusual request for a wedding cake: a life-sized cake, shaped like a deer. The couple, who asked to remain anonymous, married last week after taking home their deer cake…
A Product of Love (And Hard Work)
It’s hard to imagine the amount of work that goes into baking a cake like this. All in all, it took Cake Decorating Supervisor Pam McNeal just over ten hours to complete the delicious ark piece. all started when the bride and the groom came into the bakery with plastic antlers, asking if the baker could bake a wedding cake to “fit the antlers.” Well, McNeal did! Although the head and neck were made of styrofoam, the rest of the deer’s body was completely edible and fed over 250 people.
The reason for the specific request remains unknown, much like the couple. However, it made plenty online speculate about the wedding and also made fantastic material for a viral story. In fact, when some people saw the deer cake online, they couldn’t believe it! “I’m confused,” wrote one commenter. “All I see is a deer kneeling. Where is the cake?” Another joked: “Only in PA. Love it.”
Other Amazing Creations
As you might imagine, the giant deer cake isn’t the only crazy thing made at Shady Maple Market. In fact, it’s not even the most insane cake! The baker says she’s made chimps, alligators, lions, and a host of other animals in her time at Shady Maple. “I did a Labrador at Christmastime,” McNeal said. “There’s a couple that comes in at Christmastime every year, and they like to challenge me.”
However, the incredible cooks and bakers at Shady Maple do not stop there! Previously, they made a 500-pound burger, seen above on the left. The place also made a 33-pound Whoopie pie for the Clinic for Special Children event. The bakery makes regular-sized ones on the regular, and so they decided to help raise funds for a particular cause with a special baked good. Not only impressive – but also charitable! The best part of all? According to all the reviews, these incredible cakes don’t just look great. They taste great also! Which, let’s face it, is the most important part…
