This is one of the most inspiring stories you’ll read all year: an entire family celebrated two graduations at once. Why? Because son, Brandon, and father, Antonio, shared a graduation ceremony together! Now, they’re both facing the world with degrees in hand. Read on to find out how they inspired each other along the way and made it out of college together…
A Shared Family College Graduation
Usually, we prepare ourselves for the next chapter in life by following in the footsteps of family and friends. Whether it’s high school, college, or working, we prepare by looking to family members. However, one man, Brandon Gathers, celebrated his milestone rather differently. Brandon graduated from college right alongside his father, Antonio.
Antonio is 49-years-old and decided to return to college to earn his master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. He started by taking some online classes while his son went to school on campus. Soon, they went to school together! Brandon will receive a bachelor’s degree in business management. After years of hard work, they graduated from South Carolina University together on May 10, 2019.
Keeping Each Other Motivated
As you can imagine, the whole entire family celebrated the occasion. How many kids can say they graduated with their dad? Brandon said his father is an incredible source of inspiration for him. “He’s a God-fearing man, he’s successful, he’s intelligent, he knows what he’s doing. He is just a great person in general,” he said in an interview with ABC News 4.
Antonio said Brandon also motivated him in return. “He was an inspiration to me, just seeing his perseverance. Doing other things, and having a full-time career, you kind of put yourself on the back burner. And it was just really important to me to get his degree to pursue another avenue in my life and in my career so that I could help people.”
The Perfect Role Model
Antonio also said in the interview that yes, getting his master’s degree at the age of 49 might be a little late in life. However, once again, his son kept motivating him. “Because as he aforestated, I never would have thought that this day would be here, that we would be graduating together.”
Brandon and Antonio know their graduation day – and their entire journey together – will be something they will remember forever. They’re thankful for the opportunity, and for each other. “He’s like my inspiration,” Brandon said. “He is the perfect model of a black male father figure.”
Now, Brandon and Antonio must face the world after college. However, both know that they can always rely on each other, just like they did at South Carolina University. We wish Brandon and Antonio nothing but the best and massive congratulations!
