Despite his situation in life, a homeless man still did the right thing when he found an old woman’s wallet: he returned it. When the woman’s 12-year-old granddaughter found out what the man had done, she knew she needed to help. Within a few days, she had raised over $30,000 for the homeless man!

December 10 started like any other day for Sean Currey. Well, as normal as a day can for a homeless person. Then, while looking through a dumpster in San Rafael, California, to try and find food, Currey spotted an item on the ground. After taking a look, he realized it was a wallet. Taking a closer look, Currey discovered it belonged to Evelyn Topper, an 80-year-old local. Meanwhile, across town, Topper searched high and low for the wallet, as it had her entire world inside. “In this little wallet was everything,” she told KNTV later. “Every credit, debit, medicare card. Everything I own. I was distraught.”

Currey admits he first thought about using the cards inside, but quickly changed his mind. He promptly called Topper and gave the wallet back as soon as it was possible. “I would rather be cold and hungry and know that I did the right thing,” the 57-year-old homeless man said. “I would want someone to do the same thing for me if I lost my wallet.”

Love And Compassion Brings Hope

Soon enough, Topper had her wallet back, and she and Currey went their separate ways. However, when her 12-year-old granddaughter, Mikayla, heard the story, she felt inspired to give back to not only Currey, but the entire homeless community. Soon enough, the young girl had created a donation drive for the homeless in her city. All for her birthday, no less! “What began with a lost wallet, progressed into Mikayla’s drive-by birthday fundraiser, and has now seeded a friendship with the entire family,” the GoFundMe page reads. “This isn’t about charity. It’s about Compassion, the highest form of LOVE.”

Now, since Topper and Currey met, the girl has raised nearly $30,000! While most of the money came from the GoFundMe page, a large portion also came from a drive-through event for friends and relatives, designed by Mikayla. There, she and Currey finally met, and they decorated the street with photos of Currey, balloons, and bowls for donations! But, believe it or not, this is just the beginning of Mikayla’s plans…

Huge Plans

Now, thanks to Mikayla and her family, Currey has a place to live and prospects for the future. However, above all else, he’s happy. “I got to see him smile, and it made me really happy,” Mikayla stated. Meanwhile, Currey cannot believe his luck. “I was just so touched. It was refreshing, knowing that people her age want to help,” the homeless man said. “Who knew that returning a wallet to someone I didn’t know would turn into something that is gonna spark something really good?”

What about the GoFundMe? The family has big plans for all the extra cash – they want to build a row of houses for the local homeless community! All in all, Currey himself put it best, saying, “Maybe, if I keep doing the right thing, more people will too, and it will change the world, in a small way, for the better.” And it did! That’s a beautiful lesson we can all take with us!
