When rescue crew members headed out to a burning ship, they thought it would turn out like any other ocean rescue. However, one Thai sailor aboard the burning vessel – four kittens! In the end, he ended up saving them, becoming quite the hero!
Thai Sailor On A Mission
Let’s face it, there are no “ordinary” days in the lives of the men and women of the Royal Thai Navy. However, nothing could prepare one Royal Thai Navy member, Thatsaphon Saii, and his crew for a rescue last week. After receiving reports of a boat on fire, they quickly went out to save those they could. Within just a short time, the crew had rescued everyone aboard the ship, five Burmese and three Thai citizens. It seemed everyone was safe and sound.
But, just then, Saii saw furry paws trembling on the burning ship. Four kittens had managed to become trapped on the boat! Without thinking about his own safety, Saii dove into the waters off Koh Adang island and started swimming. “I immediately took off my shirt and put on a life jacket so I could jump into the sea,” he recalled to The Sun. Now he needed to get to the kittens in danger…
Finding The Kittens
Still in his pants, Saii ignored the freezing cold waters and pushed on. At times, the water seemed too fast and dangerous, but the Thai sailor continued on. When he reached the burning boat and the kittens, he found things worse than he initially thought. “The flames were at the back of the boat but it was starting to sink, so I knew I had to be quick,” Saii recalled. The fire moved quickly, almost leaping at the sailor, terrifying him.
Steeling himself, the Royal Thai Navy sailor grabbed the cats and put three of them into an old rice sack, while the last sat on his back. What an incredible rescue! He then slowly swam back to his boat, 50 feet away. Now, at long last, everyone – and everything – had been rescued. Of course, Saii had no idea he would soon become an international icon!
Burning Ship Survivors
Afterward, photos of Saii quickly hit the internet and went viral. People could not believe that one sailor would go so far for these cats. But Saii just feels happy that the cats are alive. “I’m so relieved that we were able to save the kittens,” the Thai sailor said. “They would have drowned or died of thirst if they went into the sea.”
Following their rescue, veterans quickly checked over the four kittens. Believe it or not, outside of some small scabs and minor burns, they were relatively unharmed! The UK’s Metro reported that some of the kittens were dehydrated and stressed after staying afloat for such a long time, but have since returned to normal. Now, animal workers in the country are prepping them for adoption. Soon enough, these kittens will find their forever, all thanks to Thatsaphon Saii and his crew.
