Last week, Britney Spears announced a complete, “indefinite,” work hiatus. The singer is taking the break to support her father as he recovers from a difficult illness and surgery. Unfortunately for fans, this includes both her upcoming Las Vegas residency shows and her new album. However, with Spears, family always comes first.
Britney Spears: I’m Taking “An Indefinite Hiatus”
On January 4, Britney Spears, the world’s most iconic pop singer, announced that she is taking an “indefinite work hiatus.” The heartbreaking reason behind this decision is the 37-year-old singer’s desire to help her father, Jamie Spears. Last month, Jamie, 66, suffered a colon rupture. Afterward, he needed serious surgery, which almost cost him his life. Doctors expect Mr. Spears to make a full recovery from his illness and surgery. However, the recovery could take months, if not longer.
Britney Spears made the announcement through an emotional post on Instagram. “I don’t even know where to start with this, because this is so tough for me to say. I will not be performing my new show Domination. I’ve been looking forward to this show and seeing all of you this year, so doing this breaks my heart…I am dedicating my focus and energy to care for my family. We have a very special relationship and I want to be with my family at this time just like they have always been there for me.”
Spears concluded her announcement with information about refunds to her Las Vegas residency and thanking fans for their support.
Her father’s illness puts Spears in a tough position: the singer planned for both a new Las Vegas residency and album to debut in 2019. In fact, many of the Las Vegas shows had already sold out! Additionally, the singer had been hard at work in the studio on her tenth album.
However, the reality made the singer understand she wants to be with her family, Lynne, 66, brother Bryan, 41, and sister Jamie Lynn, 27. To fans, this came as no surprise. Britney has spoken over and over again in interviews about her family, and how she prioritizes family over anything else.
According to the family’s spokesperson, in November, Mr. Spears became “seriously ill and was rushed to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. His colon spontaneously ruptured, and he was immediately admitted into surgery.” The artist’s father spent four weeks in the hospital, in recovery, while “an amazing team” took care of him. Today, Mr. Spears is slowly healing and “recuperating at home and gaining strength.”
What Happens Now?
It is currently unknown when Spears will be back in front of fans. While fans are receiving refunds for her Las Vegas residency Domination, which was meant to kick off in February, no new dates are scheduled. Her previous Vegas residency, Britney: Piece Of Me, is the third most earning residency, which made her over $100 million.
There is some good news, however. Spears does expect to hit the ground running on her new album once her father recovers. Yesterday, the pop star’s manager, Larry Rudolph, told People: “Everything is on hold right now until Jamie is better. But once he is, she will resume working on the album with Justin [Tranter].”
Being in the spotlight for two decades isn’t a piece of cake. However, over the past few years, Spears continues to make great decisions when it comes to her career-life balance. Her choice to cancel the Domination residency to support her father is brave, and her fans are very supportive. For Britney, family always comes first. We wish Mr. Spears and the Spears family a quick and easy recovery.
