Texas couple Maggie and Robert Griffin may have the most incredible birth story ever. Don’t get us wrong, every birth story is incredible. However, the Griffins’ tale includes an unscheduled bathroom break, a Chick-Fil-A, and a six-minute delivery! We’re sure you’ll laugh, cry, and cheer right alongside them. And don’t worry, everyone turned out fine in the end!
The Fateful Bathroom Break
Texas-native Falon Griffin, who goes by Maggie, was 38 weeks pregnant when she gave birth. Her and her husband, Robert, were driving to the San Antonio University Hospital. They both thought Maggie would get checked in and, when the time came, give birth to their newest daughter. They had no reason to believe it would be anything but a normal delivery.
On their way to the hospital, the couple made a pit-stop at a local Chick-Fil-A. They were dropping off their older daughters with a friend, who would watch them while the couple was at the hospital. Additionally, Maggie was only in mild contractions and desperately needed to use the bathroom. While Robert was helping load his daughter into their friend’s car, he realized something was wrong. Not only was the restaurant closed for the night, but Maggie’s desperate need for a bathroom was worsening.
Even though employees were closing up, the soon-to-be-mother was insistent, and the workers let them inside. Mr. Griffin told CBS affiliate KENS, “We were able to bang on the door, [Maggie] kept saying she had to go to the bathroom.” Little did anyone know that the Chick-Fil-A bathroom would turn into an emergency room.
Maggie went to the bathroom, with Robert waiting outside. Before she knew it, Maggie realized she was going to have her baby right there, in the Chick-Fil-A bathroom. When she started screaming, Chick-Fil-A employees ran to get Robert.
Upon entering the restroom, husband Robert immediately kicked into nurse/midwife/doctor mode. “I can see just the top of [the baby’s] head, just barely crowning, but I knew we couldn’t go anywhere,” Robert said. “So I told her, ‘Sweetie, we’re gonna do something great, and we’re gonna do it right here, and we’re gonna do it right now.'”
Meanwhile, Outside The Bathroom
After hearing the screams, the Chick-Fil-A employees knew what was going on and called 911. Brenda Enriquez, one of the employees, was on the phone the whole time with a police dispatcher, who asked her questions about the baby and the mother. Enriquez kept her calm, determined to aid the new parents. The employees assisted the couple by bringing them warm towels and continually reporting to the dispatcher. We don’t know about you, but we think all these employees deserve a raise!
Meanwhile, Maggie and Robert did everything in their power to deliver the baby in the most healthy way possible, given the circumstances. The baby was born with her umbilical cord wrapped twice around her neck, which can be dangerous. Amazingly, Robert somehow managed to unwrap the cord and cut it. It’s estimated that the entire ordeal, from the moment Maggie realized she was giving birth to the moment the mother cradled her child, was just six minutes! Thankfully, paramedics arrived 15 minutes after the first call was made.
Gracelyn Griffin: The Chick-Fil-A Baby
The young parents decided to name their baby Gracelyn. Afterward, Robert shared their incredible story on Facebook. Within days, it received over 300,000 likes and thousands of shares and comments. Robert wrote: “…for all the chaos, we all did amazing. Cut the chord while still in the bathroom, kept Gracie stable and mom calm, and it all worked out….not as planned, but everyone’s healthy.”
On most birth certificates, it says “born in this hospital.” However, quite fittingly, on Gracelyn’s it says “born in this Chick-Fil-A.” Additionally, Robert had to sign the certificate as the attending physician.
Gracie’s Fantastic, Chicken-Filled Future
The Griffins will always remember July 17th, and not just because it’s little Gracie’s birthday. It’s also one of the most incredible birth stories of all time. But Gracie’s story does not end there. In addition to being the birthplace of a happy, healthy baby, the restaurant gifted the child with free Chick-Fil-A food for the rest of her life. Also, the company offered Gracie a guaranteed job when she turns 14, the working age in Texas. A guaranteed job and free chicken for life? Gracelyn is set!
