It’s entirely possible that everyone now knows about the hit film Crazy Rich Asians after its incredible opening weekend. However, if you still haven’t heard of the film, you’ll definitely want to see it after reading this article. If you’ve already seen it, read on to find out just how well the film did, and why. Either way, let’s raise a glass to this great, record-breaking film!

Proper Representation

The Crazy Rich Asians’ cast is made up entirely of Asian actors and actresses. For decades, Hollywood has suffered from a severe lack of racial diversity in lead roles. 89-year-old actor James Hong, who stars in the film, has said regarding the cast, “I never thought it would take this long.”

Hong has worked in Hollywood since the 1950s, starring in everything from the original Godzilla and Chinatown to modern hits like Kung Fu Panda. There’s no denying that Hong paved the way for young, up-and-coming Asian actors and films like Crazy Rich Asians. “The young people have to fight and gain more ground. They have to continue to fight for better images and more roles. There are a few roles, but they are still not casting Asians in leading roles like businessmen,” the legendary actor said recently.

A Huge Breakthrough For All

While director Jon M. Chu previously directed some big name projects, including G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Crazy Rich Asians has a special place in his filmography. He considers the film a significant breakthrough, not only for the Asian community but for himself as well. Chu is Chinese-American and like many Asian-Americans, wanted to see a movie that mirrored his own experiences. Now, after proving the audience’s desire for representation, he can demand more equal casting in his films going forward.

Crazy Rich Asians centers around Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding), two NYU professors. Nick invites Rachel to Singapore, where he was born and raised, to attend his best friend’s wedding with him. While in Singapore, Rachel discovers that Nick comes from a very wealthy family. She is forced to face snobby socialites, fancy rituals, and petty insults. However, most intimidating of all is Nick’s disapproving mother, portrayed by the hilarious and talented Michelle Yeoh.

The story’s accessibility is part of the film’s success. Anyone can relate to Rachel’s fear of meeting her significant other’s family and viewers will fall in love with the crazy minor characters. It’s a classic love story told from a fresh perspective. Additionally, with a fantastic cast like Hong, Constance Wu (who stars in the hit-sitcom Fresh Off The Boat), and Henry Golding (BBC’s The Travel Show), many predicted this film would gross millions at the box office. And they were right.

Crazy Successful Start

In addition to the fact that it features an all-Asian cast, Crazy Rich Asians was adored by audiences and critics alike. For these reasons, it’s no surprise that the film grossed over $26.5 million in its first weekend in theaters! Just for comparison, dominating the charts this past month were the new Mission Impossible and The Meg. Starting August 15th, Crazy Rich Asians took over the number one spot at the box office, toppling these giants. Let’s take into consideration the fact that this is not a superhero movie or a remake or a reboot of a successful film. However, it isn’t a wholly original property.

Based on a best-selling book written by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians is already a massive success. Not only because of the incredible opening and its record-breaking cast but because it’s genuinely good. Some critiques named it the “rom-com that brought back rom-coms.”

Whatever the reason for its success, we hope we don’t have to wait very long for another movie as fantastic as Crazy Rich Asians.
