Late last month, police in Blackpool, England, took to social media to appeal for public help. They were trying to catch a man who allegedly stole a coat, cell phone, wallet, and case of beer from a local restaurant. So, as police often do, they released the restaurant’s security camera footage to help catch the criminal. However, the police did not anticipate the tremendous amount of hilarious comments pointing out the uncanny resemblance between the man in the footage and American actor David Schwimmer.

The Police Post That Went Viral

The Blackpool Police posted an image on Facebook showing the suspect stealing a case of beers. The post said “do you recognize this man? We want to speak to him in relation to a theft at a Blackpool restaurant.” It seems the Blackpool Police did not initially realize how much the criminal looked like David Schwimmer.

Because of the man’s physical similarity to the Friends star, people shared the post over 50,000 times. As always, the internet came through with over 100,000 comments, many of them just plain hysterical. One commenter wrote, “I don’t think it’s been this guy’s day, his week, his month, or even his year.” Another said, “lay off him. He grew up with Monica. IF YOU DIDN’T EAT FAST YOU DIDN’T EAT.” There were also many references to the iconic season two episode, “The One with Russ” where Schwimmer plays a Ross lookalike.

David Schwimmer’s Hilarious Response

The post and story became so viral that they reached David Schwimmer himself. In a good spirit, the actor shared a hilarious parody of the story on Twitter. In the video, Schwimmer is also wearing a black coat, carrying beers, and trying to avoid the camera. To top it all off, he added a caption – “Officers, I swear it wasn’t me. As you can see, I was in New York. To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation.”

Schwimmer’s video was so similar, and the public’s response to the original post was so overwhelming, that the police had to respond. “Thank you to everyone for your speedy responses,” they replied. “We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date. We’re so sorry it has to be this way.”

Additionally, the Blackpool police issued a statement to ABC News, saying, “We can see the humorous side to this but equally for us, there is a policing purpose to these kinds of appeals on social media, and in this case, it’s to help us find the man pictured, and seek justice for the victim.”

The Police Find The Thief

This past week, police finally identified the suspect. The Lancs Police tweeted, in an equally hilarious Ross Geller tone – “Could we BE any more overwhelmed with the response to our CCTV appeal about a theft at a restaurant in Blackpool? Most importantly, we’re now satisfied we’ve identified the man in the still & our inquiries are very much continuing. Huge thanks for sharing it with your Friends.” They couldn’t even help throwing another Friends reference at the very end! We’re just glad this “Russ” was caught before he went to the local museum and tried to lift some dino bones.

And obviously, Schwimmer was never a real suspect. He was on a break.
