These days, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, everyone finds themselves home a lot more often than usual. As a result, many have started picking up new hobbies, like 88-year-old Audrey Buchana. Recently, she started playing the latest hit video game, Animal Crossing. Like millions around the world, the grandmother quickly became obsessed.

For those who don’t know, the 2020 edition of the game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, is the latest in a five-game series, the first of which came out in 2001. However, unlike other games, players do not shoot each other or play a competitive game. Instead, players build villages with anthropomorphic animals and complete daily tasks like picking fruits, fishing, and the like, to continue building up their town. But, believe it or not, Buchana’s love of Animal Crossing did not begin with the newest game…

Meet Mayor Audie

It seems 88-year-old Buchanan has always had the heart of a 22-year-old. Her grandson, Paul Hubans, a video game developer and an avid gamer, recently discovered his nan played over 3,500 hours of the last Animal Crossing game, released in 2018. On YouTube, Hubans shared a 30-minute video of his grandma explaining her impressive, well-constructed hamlet. She also shared the animals she’s encountered and her in-game avatar: Mayor Audie.

As you might imagine, people simply adored not only Buchanan’s world, but her incredible personality as well! In fact, many viewers contacted Hubans, saying they wanted to surprise Buchanan with something. So, the internet came together and purchased the newest edition of the game for her! Now, she’s on to the 2020 edition, having already spent hours building up a new village.

“I felt like people really wanted to be a part of it,” Hubans said. “I was planning to buy it [the for her anyway, but I wanted to oblige people’s generosity, so I set up a GoFundMe to get it for her.”

Already, Buchanan has adapted to playing the new version of Animal Crossing on the Nintendo Switch, which fans also purchased for her. You can see above how much her new Mayor Audie looks like her! When asked why she loves Animal Crossing so much, the 88-year-old gamer said, “It’s more like a dollhouse than it is a game. I never had a dollhouse when I was a kid, so I guess that’s why I like it.” Now the grandma can play it whenever she wants. However, the story does not end there!

Apparently, Nintendo also saw the incredibly heartwarming video. Now, the company wants to commemorate Buchanan’s character in-game! Mayor Audie, complete with a big pair of sunglasses and winged eyeliner, will appear in a forthcoming update.

We wish Buchanan many more hours of video playing time!
