Earlier this month, famous “momager” Kris Jenner and daughter Kendall promised a huge, personal, “raw” story about the young model. A massive build-up grew, with fans eagerly anticipating Kendall’s tale. However, when Kendall finally revealed her story, many found it more than disappointing.
Read on to find out just how Kendall’s “big” reveal went down…
Is Kendall Jenner #TheChange?
Earlier this month, Kendall Jenner shared a video to her Instagram account, where she said, “When I was 14, I couldn’t reach as many people as I can now…I can speak to so many people and be like, ‘I can help you, and it’s okay, and I experience it. I’m very normal, and like, I understand you, like I can connect with you.’ I can try and help.”
And as the meme goes, “the devil works hard, but Kris Jenner works harder.” Momager Kris Jenner shared the video, adding “I’m so proud of my darling @KendallJenner for being so brave and vulnerable…Make sure to watch Kendall Jenner’s Twitter on Sunday night to find out what I’m talking about.” After the message, Jenner added some inspiring hashtags like “#BeTheChange” and “#ShareYourStory.”
Fans believe the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner family, would come out with an inspiring message. Perhaps she would share childhood stories about bullying; maybe she’d come out of the closet. Some thought she’d share a heartfelt and inspiring story about sexual abuse, and how she grew from it. However, Kendall, the world’s top-earning model, surprised everyone with her announcement. And not in a good way…
The Big Reveal… And The Backlash
A few days passed, with anticipation building. Finally, Kendall Jenner revealed her “raw” story…she struggled with acne as a teen. The story did little more than announce that Kendall Jenner a new spokesperson for Proactiv, skin care company.
A backlash quickly followed the announcement. Fans felt cheated; people thought it was a poor choice such personal language to build up the tension for a commercial reveal. Others disagreed with Jenners’ decision to use her worldwide platform for financial gain instead of starting real, meaningful change. They claim Kendall is disconnected from her audience, unaware of the influence she wields, especially over younger fans. Some even called it “cynical” and “cold.”
Some fans stood up for the model. Fans know Jenner suffered from acne growing up, and that she’d been struggling with her self image because of it. Nothing she, or mother Kris, said is technically untrue. However, Proactiv is a high-end product, and not everyone can buy it. Also, Kendall Jenner is extremely wealthy, and her entire career is built on her looks – she likely gets regular, expensive facial treatments from LA spas. Many said that her acne didn’t disappear thanks to Proactiv and that she’s promoting false hopes.
Kardashian-Jenners: Expectations vs. Reality
Of course, not everyone felt cheated by the announcement. Kris Jenner is the business manager of all of her children and gets 10% off every deal they make. Everything goes through her. There’s no question the Kardashian-Jenners are smart, sometimes manipulative, social media users. Especially when advertising something. So anything Kris is in charge of cannot surprise fans too much – it’s her job to sell things. (Oh, and there was Kendall’s infamous Pepsi commercial which also received significant backlash, which made people not expect much out of the model.)
These days, where social media is the primary way celebrities express their opinions and beliefs, it’s easy to take advantage of it and promote yourself. Whether you feel cheated by Kendall’s announcement or believe this is standard Kardashian-Jenners behavior – they sure stay relevant and talked about. And that is all thanks to mama Kris’ control and understanding of the market.
