When coronavirus hit, many communities and hospitals found themselves lacking masks. Recently, they donated masks in their home state and encouraged others to do the same.

Born and raised in Texas, when Matthew McConaughey his state needed help he sprang into action. The actor, along with his wife Camila, immediately started discussing options to help on the ground. After talking to some experts, the couple landed on donating masks. Meanwhile, Lincoln, a car company that McConaughey has made commercials for, also decided to help when they heard the plan. When it came time to donate the 110,000 masks, Camila insisted on going in person, to make sure that everything was alright in the hospitals. “Thanks to @lincoln for donating 110 thousand masks – me and @camilamcconaughey hitting the road to get em to rural hospitals in need across Texas,” the actor captioned the photo above.

While these are the first masks McConaughey donated in person; it’s not the first time he’s helped with coronavirus. The couple also donated 80,000 masks to New Orleans and Austin in April. “It was important for us to make sure that here in Austin, not just the hospitals got them, but also the police department and the fire department as well. At this moment, we’ve got to find ways to help both sides because they’re all on the front line right now, and we can’t afford to lose any of them,” Camila shared then. Believe it or not, that’s still not all they’ve been doing to help!

Green Light

In addition to helping medical workers, Matthew and Camila have entertained people in isolation. For example, they held a Zoom call for the elders at The Enclave at Round Rock Senior Living in Texas. Meanwhile, the actor also took to Instagram to deliver a heartfelt message to everyone: “I believe that green light is gonna be built on the values that we can enact right now. Values of fairness, kindness, accountability, resilience, respect, courage,” he said. “If we practice those things right now, when we get out of this, this virus, this time might be the one time it brings us all together and unifies us like we have not been in a long time.”

In the following weeks and months, plenty of his 3 million followers listened to his advice. Along the way, plenty more celebrities came online to help in these hard times. Like McConaughey, the singer Shakira donated the masks and ventilators to the hospitals. Bismack Biyombo, the NBA player, also donated over $1 million to the Congo, to help with their coronavirus outbreak, citing McConaughey as an inspiration.

It’s fantastic to see celebrities using their power to help essential workers, and people stuck at home. Thankfully, Matthew and Camila do not plan to end their support anytime soon. When this pandemic ends, the McConaughey couple promises to continue helping!
