Now that Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has conquered Hollywood, he’s decided to try out something else: politics. That’s right! McConaughey says that he’s seriously considering a run for Texas governor!
Considering A New Career
It started amid the coronavirus pandemic, when McConaughey sat down with Oprah Winfrey on her show The Oprah Conversation. There, the actor told Winfrey about his struggles with acting. As it turns out, he didn’t always think that he would become an actor. “I dabbled with thinking about other careers,” McConaughey explained. Throughout his life, he’s thought about becoming a high school football coach or teacher, a wildlife guide, even an orchestra conductor!
Then, McConaughey explained that all these alternate career ideas came flooding back after starring in romantic films like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Afterward, he had lost all love for the craft of acting. “I was not going back,” McConaughey said. In this time, a studio offered him a $14.5 million check for a single romantic comedy. However, McConaughey “declined the offer.” During this time, the actor became a part-time film professor at the Moody College at the University of Texas, seeing if the future could hold another career path. McConaughey said it was about integrity. “If I couldn’t do what I wanted, I wasn’t going to do what I didn’t, no matter the price,” he said.
Thankfully, roles in dramatic pictures like Dallas Buyers Club came along, and McConaughey kept acting, doing what he loves. Now, he’s one of the top actors in the world, no longer starring in poorly written comedies. However, the thoughts of another career never left McConaughey’s mind…
Matthew McConaughey: Texas Governor?
About a month after he brought up his different career ideas to Winfrey, McConaughey continued discussing alternative career baths. Famed radio host Hugh Hewitt asked the actor, point-blank, in November 2020 if he planned to run for office at some point. “I mean, that wouldn’t be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me,” McConaughey said, adding that people need a voice in what they see as a broken system. “Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now. And when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.”
Throughout 2021, McConaughey has continued turning up the heat, stating that running for governor of Texas has become “a true consideration.” It could undoubtedly be the next chapter in his life. “I’m looking into now again, what is my leadership role?” McConaughey wondered aloud on the Texas crime podcast The Balanced Voice, after announcing his governorship consideration. “Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?”
So, will Matthew McConaughey run for governor of his home state of Texas or possibly even president? Only time will tell! But its certainly seeming more likely with every passing interview…
