On the new website for their non-profit, Archewell, both Meghan Markle and Prince Harry began their New Year’s letter by releasing never-before-seen photos of them on their mothers. The Duchess released a beautiful image of her hugging her mother, Doria Ragland, as a child. Meanwhile, Harry selected a photo of him sitting on the late Princess Diana’s shoulders.

For those who don’t know, the Archewell foundation, which Markle and Harry former after leaving the Royal Family, earned its name from their son, Archie. “Before Sussex Royal came the idea of ‘arche’ — the Greek word meaning ‘source of action,'” the couple explained in an announcement last year. “We connected to this concept for the charitable organization we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name. To do something of meaning, to do something that matters. Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon. We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.”

Well, now the time to launch Archewell has finally come! Alongside the wonderful new photos, Markle and Harry also released a New Year’s letter, not only explaining the images, but also revealing their plan for 2021.

Archewell: Building A Better World

Markle and Harry started their New Year’s letter with a simple introduction: “I am my mother’s son. And I am our son’s mother. Together we bring you Archewell,” they wrote. “We believe in the best of humanity. Because we have seen the best of humanity. We have experienced compassion and kindness, from our mothers and strangers alike. In the face of fear, struggle, and pain, it can be easy to lose sight of this. Together, we can choose to put compassion in action…we invite you to join us as we work to build a better world, one act of compassion at a time.”

Continuing on, the former members of the Royal Family listed some of their first partnerships with Archewell. The list includes the Center for Humane Technology, the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry, and Stanford University’s Dr. James Doty, all places and people focused on compassion.

The couple’s press secretary, Toya Holness, drilled this point home in a statement about the couple’s letter. “Founded earlier this year by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Archewell uplifts communities through non-profit partnerships and creative activations. It’s a place where compassion matters, communities gather, and storytelling is the engine,” wrote Holness. “The website has been updated to reflect the work Archewell has undertaken throughout 2020 and to create a place for people and communities around the world to share their stories.”

This is just one of many plates Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are spinning. They also recently released their first podcast and signed a deal with Netflix. 2021 certainly looks to be their year!
