There’s a lot of drama and sad things happening in the world, and sometimes it seems overwhelming. However, we can always rely on the royal family to brighten our day with some exciting news! Earlier this week, Kensington Palace made a major, happy announcement: Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle are expecting their first child! We’ll tell you everything you need to know about this future royal baby.
Prince Harry And Meghan Markle – A Brief History
This past May, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan tied the knot after dating for a year and a half, and announcing their engagement in October 2017. Their wedding was a gorgeous spring wedding, filled with their loved ones. The two met through mutual friends in the UN and went on a blind date. Afterward, they kept a long-distance relationship for a while, since Meghan Markle was starring in the show Suits. These days, they obviously live in Kensington Palace, taking care of their royal duty and bringing much joy to us peasants with every outing.
A Palace Confirmation
On Monday, Kensington Palace made quite the royal announcement: “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019. Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”
We love a spring royal baby! There were also some statements from the royal couple’s families. Doria Ragland, Meghan Markle’s mother, said she “…is very happy about this lovely news and she looks forward to welcoming her first grandchild”. The Queen, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles, Duchess Camilla, and Prince Harry’s older brother and wife Kate Middleton are all “delighted” for the couple.
Which Title Will The Royal Baby Receive?
There are many rules for inheriting and receiving titles as a British royal. The minute news of a royal baby breaks, people around the world love speculating about the next royal title.
You may not know this, but The Queen named Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. If their first baby is a boy, traditionally, he will eventually inherit his father’s title. He could also receive the title of Earl of Dumbarton, the secondary Sussex title. Also, a son would earn the title “Lord of Windsor,” while a daughter would be “Lady of Windsor.”
However, one of the reasons we love Queen Elizabeth is she likes to break royal traditions! Her Royal Majesty might decide to give Harry and Meghan’s child a similar title to her other grandchildren, Prince William and Kate’s children. Prince William is Duke of Cambridge and Kate is Duchess of Cambridge, so their children’s titles are His/Her Royal Prince/Princess of Cambridge. However, dukedom can only be inherited by a male heir. So if Harry and Meghan just have girls, the title of Duke of Sussex might vanish.
Changing Royal Traditions
As we said, the Queen loves to break royal tradition. In 2013, Queen Elizabeth created the Succession to the Crown Act. She changed the succession rules so that, now, the order of birth determines the line of succession. The Queen made this change while Duchess Kate was pregnant with her first child, Prince George. If this wouldn’t have happened, Prince Louis, the youngest of Her Majesty’s grandchildren, would be ahead of his older sister, Princess Charlotte, in the line of succession.
The order of the line of succession to the British throne begins with Prince Charles, the Queen’s son. Next in line is Prince William, the Queen’s eldest grandson, and his children. Following William’s children, Prince Harry is fifth in line. And now, the new royal baby will be sixth in line for the throne. Hey, sixth isn’t that bad future royal baby!
We’re sure the world will love the new royal baby, regardless of title or chance at the crown. We wish Duchess Meghan a healthy, calm pregnancy, and to the couple – only love and happiness!
