Sure, you know them well. However, did you know that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, have been together for 73 years? That’s right! They just celebrated their most recent anniversary with a brand-new Royal picture that will surely make you smile!
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip
For those who were there, it must have seemed like only yesterday. However, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip exchanged their vows way back in 1947, at Westminster Abbey. Since then, the 94-year-old monarch and her 99-year-old husband have arguably raised the most famous generations of the Royal Family ever. Meanwhile, now, their marriage has proven one of the sturdiest and longest in the House of Windsor’s history.
In order to celebrate their wedding anniversary, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip posed for a brand-new portrait. Then, they released it last week on the official Royal Family social media accounts. “This new image has been released to mark the 73rd wedding anniversary of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh tomorrow,” the post read. “In the photograph Her Majesty and His Royal Highness are seen looking at an anniversary card made by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, alongside other cards and letters sent by well-wishers.”
Their relationship means much more than love, however. It also means quite a bit to the entire country of England…
A Royal Relationship Begins
As stated, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip now have the longest British Royal marriage ever at 73 years. Previously, King George III, who reigned from 1760 to 1820, and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz held the record, with their marriage lasting 57 years. Incredibly, it took nearly 200 years for a Royal couple to beat that. In a sign of respect, Elizabeth and Phillip posed in front of George and Charlotte’s portraits in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle for their 2017 anniversary image.
But how did their story begin? Well, it all started when Elizabeth was but a teenager. While she and Philip fell in love right away, they could do little more than write letters until adulthood. Then, at the age of 21, the two finally married, despite actually being related! That’s right! Elizabeth and Philip are actually third cousins by way of Queen Victoria. Incredibly, they are also second-cousins-once-removed via King Christian IX of Denmark. Still, that did not stop the two from becoming one of the most famous couples in history.
Now, Elizabeth and Philip are stronger than ever! Of course, throughout their marriage, the two also had four famous children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. However, two of their grandchildren, Prince Harry and Prince William, have now become quite possibly more famous than even the Queen herself! Only time will tell if the two young men, or Elizabeth and Philip’s eight grandchildren, will live up to their standards. Only time will tell! For now, fans are content with the Queen, her husband, and their incredible marriage.
