For celebrities, things like college tuition don’t seem like a big deal. However, to ordinary folk, it can mean the difference between a good life and a bad one. So, when megastar Taylor Swift heard that one of her biggest fans needed some help with tuition payments, she stepped up.
Meet Ayesha Khurram
Ayesha Khurram’s, a second-year student at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, obsession with Taylor Swift started years ago. Growing up in Pakistan, Khurram found Swift’s songs uplifting and inspiring. Over the years, she consistently relied on the singer’s music to get her through the hard times in her life.
After immigrating to Canada with her parents, Khurram finally managed to see Swift in concert. She even managed to snag some backstage passes and got to meet the famous singer. However, Khurram had no idea that her interactions with Swift would continue…
A Strange Donation
While Khurram, above middle, found solace in Swift’s music, she continued to face many hardships in her life. Just before she started her second year at the University of Waterloo, Khurram found out that Ontario planned to make massive cuts to its student assistant programs. As a result, Khurram and her family would have to come up with more money than usual to pay her tuition.
Then, the Khurram family also received a piece of devastating medical news: doctors diagnosed Khurram’s mother with chronic kidney diseases. As her parents both work low-income jobs as Pakistani immigrants in a foreign country, Khurram knew she would have to raise the money herself. “I had no idea how we were going to do it,” said the 20-year-old. “I didn’t really realize the impact of it until I calculated my funds and I realized it didn’t cover my student housing and the tuition itself.”
One of her friends suggested that Khurram set-up a PayPal account and ask for donations from friends and family. Khurram thought it was a great idea, opened an account, and shared the link on her Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram. Then, within just hours of posting the link on her social media profiles, Khurram got an incredible notification. Someone had made a single donation of $6,386.47, enough to cover her entire college tuition and rent! And not just anyone – Taylor Swift herself!
“Get Your Learn On, Girl!”
It turns out that Taylor Swift had learned about Khurram’s trouble through her post on the social media blogging site, Tumblr. Hundreds of accounts shared the Canadian’s PayPal, including a user that Swift follows. So, the “You Need to Calm Down” singer decided to pay for Khurram’s tuition! Swift attached a note to the donation, reading, “Ayesha, get your learn on, girl! I love you! Taylor.”
Khurram later shared the news on her Instagram, in a post that the singer herself liked. Speaking about Swift with Global News, the college student said, “she is honestly the kindest most genuine, most loving, caring person I know. She really is everything she appears to be.”
Now, Khurram will finish her degree and has an even greater respect for her favorite pop star. Plus, she believes she knows what Swift is trying to teach the world: “Be good to people, be kind to people, pay it forward.” Swift clearly believes this as well, as this isn’t even the first time she’s helped a fan pay for college. Just a few years ago, in 2015, the singer gave another fan over $2,000 to help with her college loans. Who knows who the “Shake It Off” star will help next?
