Popular singer Taylor Swift has now received an honorary doctorate from New York University! At 32 years old, the celebrity came out to reassure students about their life choices and give them hope for the future.
Another Achievement For Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift, a worldwide famous and talented singer-songwriter, was granted an honorary doctorate by New York University. It became one of the few times the Grammy winner gave a different acceptance speech – this time, Swift focused her attention on students. Knowing that they have a lot to endure and accept in the future, the 32-year-old star told them that she felt the same. Moreover, she referenced a few of her hit songs, including Shake It Off – probably the most popular anthem for haters. “Hi, I’m Taylor,” she began the speech. “The last time I was in a stadium this size, I was dancing in heels and wearing a glittery leotard. This outfit is much more comfortable.” On stage, she was wearing black and purple Doctoral regalia. Previously, she put it on to receive a Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa.
Why was this even so important? Apart from honoring the Class of 2022, it also shined a light on 2020-2021 graduates, who had to survive through the peak of the pandemic. It was as huge as Swift said – the event took over the whole Yankee Stadium! Right when the graduates needed some support, the singer knew what to say. After all, she endured some hardships in her life as well. The celebrity had to balance her work with studying and receiving her degree.
So, Swift didn’t lose any time supporting the students of New York University. “Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once,” she said. “Part of growing up and moving into new chapters of your life is about catch and release.” The singer continued the topic with cringeworthy situations. “Secondly, learn to live alongside cringe…I had a phase where, for the entirely of 2012, I dressed like a 1950s housewife,” she said. “But you know what? I was having fun.” Indeed, Swift had a phase when she would mostly wear cardigans with her outfits. That said, the musician asked the students of the university to never miss any opportunities during their youth.
“I became a young adult while being fed the message that if I didn’t make any mistakes, all the children of America would grow up to be perfect angels. However, if I did slip up, the entire earth would fall off its axis and it would be entirely my fault and I would go to pop star jail forever and ever,” Taylor explained. “You will screw it up sometimes. So will I. And when I do, you will most likely read about it on the internet. Hard things will happen to us. We will recover. We will learn from it. We will grow more resilient because of it.” She became one of the three recipients of honorary degrees from NYU – and it was the first degree she received during her music career.
Beginning January 2022, NYU’s Clive Davis Institute offered a course on Taylor Swift. It covers her whole music entrepreneurship.
